The Boiler Op Plt Op Mec operates and maintains the following trades throughout the Hospital complex; electrical, structural, mechanical and HVAC along with boiler operations.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Boiler Op Plt Op Mec at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Electrical:
    • Repair/install electrical service (115/208) single and three phase circuit) to starters/lighting/motors and receptacles. 
    • Isolates defects in wiring, switches, motors and other electrical equipment using testing instruments. 
    • Install and repair work according to the National Electrical Code.
  • Structural:
    • Repair partitions, doors, ceilings, building framework.
    • Safely operate all hand and power tools.
    • Work according to blueprint and diagram specifications.
  • Mechanical:
    • Carry out effective preventive maintenance on equipment throughout the Medical Center. 
    • Install, inspect/repair/test all HVAC, refrigeration, pumps, compressors and related equipment.
  • Plumbing/Pipe Fitting:
    • Replace and repair steam piping and traps as needed.
    • Fit and thread up to and including 3 inches Schedule 80 pipe thru the use of a hand and/or electrical pipe threader. 
    • Sweat/braze copper piping as required.
    • Perform plumbing repairs on sinks, toilets and drains. Responsible for operating and maintaining all systems located within the Boiler Room.
  • Responsible for emergency power; operating and maintaining all domestic hot water, water treatment, medical suction, medical air, plant air and all related equipment.
  • Operates central refrigeration system.
  • Provides all necessary instrument documentation of readings.
  • Tours facility to observe operating equipment, meters and gauges to ensure that operation is in accord with specified instructions.
  • Responsible for operating and maintaining all combustion equipment in accordance with emission standards when called upon in relief of a stationary engine in any emergency situation.
  • Provides Patient Room Area Maintenance through the use of a checklist.
  • Broken electrical beds.
  • Heating and cooling units in rooms.
  • Lighting, over-bed, night light, bath/shower light.
  • Over-bed table and furniture.
  • Plumbing - Clogged toilet/sink toilet flushometer, faucet and shower controls.
  • Hot and cold water to rooms.
  • Ventilation to rooms (supply and exhaust and temperature of same). 
  • Door hardware.
  • Nurse call system/paging system.
  • Telephone.
  • Assists in security related functions, such as corpse removal to the morgue box.
  • Must observe safety standards by the Hospital and government agencies including use of safety protective equipment, glasses and clothing.
  • Must be able to perform snow removal duties. 
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned. 
  • Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), GED equivalent programs, and/or other Vocational degrees/certificates. 
  • A minimum of two (2) years High Pressure Steam plus one (1) year refrigeration or air conditioning and on-the-job experience with pumps and pipe work.
  • Minimum Black Seal Fireman in charge of High Pressure license plus 6 month course (75 hours) in theory or equivalent experience.
  • Some exposure to burns, electrical shocks. In contact with chemicals that are toxic in nature. Also minor injuries due to falls, abrasions, etc. May be required to work overtime on an emergency basis. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.
