The Anatomical Lab Manager will oversee operations and administration in the Gross Anatomy Laboratory (GAL or lab) facilities for the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine at the Interprofessional Health Sciences Campus in Nutley, NJ. The Anatomical Lab Manager is responsible for lab scheduling, maintenance, embalming, pathology specimens, and health, safety, all federal, state, and local regulatory compliance, and the setup and breakdown of labs for teaching activities. The Anatomical Lab Manager will also act as the registered manager with the State Board of Mortuary Science of New Jersey and funeral director for the Anatomical Donation Program. Responsible for obtaining consent, recording cause of death vital statistics information, and preparing EDRS certificates, permits, and authorizations. Liaises directly with anatomical donors and their families. Works closely with faculty, staff and students to project a favorable image of the Anatomical Donation Program.
Responsibilities
A day in the life of a Anatomical Lab Manager at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
- Oversee, plan, organize, and direct the overall operations and administration of the lab for the School of Medicine and other stakeholders, including Seton Hall University.
- Maintain the lab, morgue, and cold storage room in a sanitary manner.
- Prepare, and, where necessary, embalm anatomical specimens for long-term use.
- Maintain cadaver and specimen inventory.
- Coordinate handling, storage, shipping, and final disposition of cadavers.
- Order and maintain embalming equipment, laboratory supplies, chemicals, and related materials.
- Maintain the schedule for lab usage.
- Coordinate with faculty to set up and breakdown the lab for various curricula.
- Facilitate cadaver cremation, including the preparation and maintenance of permanent records such as cremation authorizations and required permits.
- Assure the lab meets Environmental Health & Safety compliance.
- Serve as funeral director for the Anatomical Donation Program.
- Handle final arrangements with families making anatomical donations.
- Distribute Anatomical Donation Program information.
- Maintain the donor registry.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Adheres to the standards identified in the Medical Center's Organizational Competencies.
Qualifications
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Associate's degree.
- Graduation from a licensed school of Mortuary Sciences.
- Knowledgeable and competent in embalming, anatomy, and dissection.
- Hands-on experience preparing and handling cadavers.
- Knowledge and compliance with New Jersey State Board of Mortuary Science regulations.
- Knowledge of the process of whole body Anatomical Donation.
- Knowledgeable in preservation techniques and the care and maintenance of tissue.
- Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records of activity.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective and respectful work environments and working relationships.
- Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate work schedules and assignments.
- Ability to adapt to continually changing needs of individuals requesting materials for medical education and research.
- Knowledge of laboratory environments with cadavers and gross anatomical specimens.
- Ability to lift, move, and manipulate cadavers within the morgue and lab up to 250lbs., with assistance of an electric lift, as needed.
- Knowledge of New Jersey medical waste, federal laboratory safety, and hazardous materials requirements.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient computer skills including but not limited to Microsoft Office and Google Suite platforms.
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:
- Bachelor's degree.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
- Licensure with the State Board of Mortuary Science of New Jersey.
