Responsibilities
A day in the life of an Endoscopy Technician at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
- Prepares Endoscopy rooms with appropriate supplies and equipment necessary for each individual procedure as outlined in the departmental policy and procedure manual; refers to the physician's preference list for special needs, equipment, or accessories of the Gastroenterologist performing the scheduled Endoscopy.
- Demonstrates competence in assisting the Endoscopy team in all procedures as directed in an accurate and precise manner.
- Consistently anticipates and prepares necessary supplies/accessories and equipment to the Gastroenterologist and Endoscopy nurses, as requested, in such a manner that all needed supplies for the procedure are within reach.
- Remains alert during procedures and demonstrates an ability to handle unexpected situations with calm efficiency.
- Adjusts endoscopic equipment and assists procedures as directed by the Gastroenterologist or staff nurses.
- Always follows orders carefully and completely; checks at the end of the day all equipment assigned to ensure proper functioning; maintains an awareness of special maintenance procedures; promptly reports any malfunctioning equipment to the director; inspects the department regularly for proper equipment function needs.
- Follows departmental procedures in setting up and assisting procedures, hand washing, gowning, gloving, face shielding and observing universal precaution/contamination/breaks in aseptic technique.
- Strictly adheres to hospital policy and procedure regarding infection control and isolation procedures.
- Demonstrates close attention to blood and body fluid contamination.
- Keeps Endoscopy cart/accessories/supplies neat, clean, dry, and sterile condition if needed: identifies and immediately reports any breaks in aseptic techniques and contamination by self and others;including disposal of used linens, gloves, instruments, accessories, equipment and waste; cleans Endoscopy cart/ accessories/supplies at the end of each case according to established procedures.
- Follows established procedures in equipment after care and maintenance such as proper leak testing, washing, cleaning, disinfecting or sterilizing of scopes, supplies and accessories according to manufacturers guidelines.
- Follows aseptic technique when opening sterile supplies and setting-up procedures.
- Discards any contaminated supplies immediately, according to established written procedures.
- Assists in the After Care of Endoscopy Department post procedure and at then end of each day such as keeping the rooms presentable and ready for the next case or next day.
- Follows written procedures for chemical (Cidex OPA) potency monitoring, solutions change and its spill protocol.
- Demonstrates competence in the care of specimens (bacteriological anaerobic and aerobic, frozen sections, pathology) and with accuracy in collecting, recording, labeling, and handling of specimens at all times.
- Demonstrates an awareness of legal responsibilities and the reason for complete information of laboratory slips / labeling specimens.
- Follows written procedures in accounting for specimens and reports to Endoscopy nurse for any discrepancy.
- Reports to Professional staff and responds appropriately to changing workloads, crises and or emergency situation in a professional, caring and expedient manner.
- Assists the professional staff in the utilization of emergency equipment in a competent manner.
- Assist the nurses in materials management, ordering supplies, and restocking procedures rooms.
- Maintains CPR certification and demonstrates an ability to function in emergency situations.
- Demonstrates a good rapport, ability to work effectively and cooperatively working relationship with all members of the health care team.
- Responds to co-workers with concern and cooperation.
- Greets patients in a courteous manner, responds to patients with empathy and positive interpersonal skills, anticipates patient's needs, introduces self and refers to patient by name. Communicates clearly and tactfully with patients.
- Ensures comfort and safety for patient during pre, Intra and post procedure. Demonstrates an awareness of patient`s fears and apprehension.
- Supports patients emotionally. Communicates clearly and tactfully with patients.
- Prepares for set up; hangs; monitors; and discontinues intravenous fluids with accuracy and according to established procedures and within scope of practice.
- Assists with or transports patients according to proper techniques of body mechanics to protect and personal safety; always ensures patient's safety by maintaining beds in the low position with side rails in place locked at all times, and by properly securing patients when transporting by wheelchair or stretcher.
- Assists and accompanies patients in the admission, transfer and discharge process.
- Assists the professional staff in setting up patients for procedure such as hooking patient up to cardiac, BP, and pulse oximeter monitors.
- Carefully follows established and setting up for Endoscopy procedures outlined in the department manual under the direction of the Endoscopy nurse.
- Attends Endoscopy Staff Meeting; attends all JCAHO required in-service education programs yearly; participates in hospital emergency and disaster procedures; knows personal role in case of a fire while on duty.
- Regularly updates knowledge of techniques and regulations appropriate to the age of patient served.
- Assists with the orientation of new personnel assigned to Endoscopy.
- Respond within 45 minutes when on-call.
- Provides post-mortem care and transport of body in a safe, precise manner to the morgue.
- Communicates with nurses, physicians and professionals clearly and concisely especially during procedures.
- Orders endoscopic supplies, accessories and equipment. Receives, logs and places items in their proper storage area.
- Calls appropriate department (Biomed, Maintenance) to report equipment needing repair (Endoscopic equipment, heating, air conditioning etc.) and makes out work requisitions and sends to appropriate department.
- Calls appropriate outside company for repairs, loaners and trouble shooting and submits work requisition to Director or assigned Registered Nurse.
- Keeps a quarterly inventory of endoscopes. Call appropriate outside company for repairs, loaners, trouble shooting and submits work requisition to director.
- Participates in quality assessments and improvement program.
- Assists in clerical work and scheduling cases.
- Secures and documents patients belongings and valuables in accordance with hospital established procedures.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), and/or GED equivalent programs.
- Satisfactory completion of an approved Endoscopy/SDS technician course with valid certification.
- Minimum of one year Endocopy/SDS experience.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
- HSPA Certified Endoscope Reprocessor

Compensation
Starting at $20.85 Hourly
HMH is committed to pay equity and transparency for our team members. The posted rate of pay in this job posting is a reasonable good faith estimate of the minimum base pay for this role at the time of posting in accordance with the New Jersey Pay Transparency Act and does not reflect the full value of our market-competitive total rewards package.
