The Vice President of Perioperative Services directs and participates in the development and implementation of the organization's strategic plan, service line performance improvement programs, and annual operating budget, plans, goals and objectives. Interprets, communicates and assures the implementation of the organization's mission, vision and values and strategic objectives. Participates with the Board of Governors, Administrative Staff, Management and the Medical Staff in the decision making structures and processes of the Medical Center. Responsible for the strategic vision and direction of Perioperative Services for Hackensack University Medical Center. Responsible for the operations of the OR Administration, Pediatric Inpatient and Ambulatory Surgical Center, Inpatient Operating Room, Center for Ambulatory Surgery, OR-Cardiac Surgery, Inpatient Surgical Admission Suite/PACU, Ambulatory Surgical DAR/PACU, Central Processing Department, Anesthesiology, Center for Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Perfusion Services, Pre-Anesthesia Evaluation Department and Inpatient and Outpatient Endoscopy Services. Functions as the coordinator of all administrative operations and fiscal responsibilities, provides solutions, leadership and administration of staff, etc., and assures the Departments are kept in compliance. Responsible for achieving high patient, physician and employee satisfaction. Enhances quality through strong performance improvement programs. Maintains current knowledge of the Perioperative business environment, trends in healthcare and standards of care.
Responsibilities
A day in the life of a Vice President of Perioperative Services at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
- Drives service line profitability through revenue and expense management and through the development and expansion of programs.
- Responsible for the quality and financial outcomes of the Center for Ambulatory Surgery, Inpatient Operating Room, Pediatric Operating Room suites, Center for Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery and Endoscopy Suites.
- Assures cost efficient utilization of OR time for over 400 physicians.
- Offers suggestions and solutions in accordance with established scheduling policies.
- Suggests and implements policy modifications consistent with the changing dynamics of the Perioperative Service lines.
- Recommends perioperative policy to OR Committee.
- Monitors charging procedures to assure compliance and maximize revenue.
- Mentors Directors and Managers in effectively dealing with scheduling problems, assists the management team in developing and applying leadership skills.
- Mentors Department Educators in providing staff development and training consistent with current 'state-of-the-art' practice.
- Assures that optimum patient care is delivered, alerts to trends in non-compliance with established policy and procedure, and refers to Nurse Educators for follow-up.
- Manages the performance appraisal process initially and annually.
- Disciplines, councils, and settles grievances, and both recommends and participates in hire/discharge/transfer of personnel.
- Administer the effective allocation of capital and human resources, including the organization of the service lines, determination and control of appropriate staffing mix and levels, and management productivity.
- Administer the effective allocation of expense resources within the service lines.
- Evaluates need and approves capital and expense budgets for Perioperative departments consistent with the strategic vision of the Medical Center.
- Evaluates feasibility, cost, and priority of physician and personnel requests regarding personnel, equipment, and supplies.
- Mentors Directors and Managers regarding fiscal responsibilities.
- Identifies opportunities for bottom-line growth, and works with Finance to implement.
- Provides a cost-effective environment while maintaining a high quality of care.
- Monitors monthly reports and directs clinical changes when appropriate.
- Sets strategic foundation for departmental activities to assure that State DOH and Joint Commission regulations are met.
- Assures perioperative performance improvement outcomes are met, as nationally benchmarked.
- Authorize policies in collaboration with the Nurse Educators and the Policy and Procedure Committee.
- Responsible for policy development and deployment by the Director and Managers to assure staff understanding, implementation, and compliance with policies and procedures.
- Maintains a knowledge of innovations and changes in perioperative operations in order to keep the Medical Center current with the changing healthcare environment.
- Participates in the Quality and Safety Committee of the Board and assures systems and protocols provide support a safe patient environment.
- Responsible for Perioperative computer systems and their interface with the Medical Center.
- Provides statistics for surgical volume and quality.
- Participates as Chairperson and/or member on multiple hospital-wide committees.
- Adheres to the standards identified in the Medical Center's Organizational & Managerial Standards.
Essential Position Specific Functions
Administrative:
- The Vice President of Perioperative Service Line works closely with other institutional leaders and advisors to provide the appropriate leadership and support for the creation and pursuit of health care goals of the institution.
- Fosters the values and supports the objectives of the Medical Center within the system.
- Through oversight of Directors and Managers and in collaboration with the Chairperson(s), Institute Directors, Medical Directors and Medical Staff, directs the overall operations of patient care programs and services for multiple hospital inpatient, outpatient and service lines-related departments.
- Leads change in the perioperative services area of influence and leadership in all interventional services.
- Develop an organizational structure, assign responsibilities and delegates authority.
- Provide leadership and support to staff, promotes and maintains harmonious and effective relationships with members of the clinical staff, members of senior leadership, the management team and other medical center departments.
- Champion the on-going design, re-design and improvement of operational processes to enhance success.
- Ensures compliance with state and federal law, accreditation and professional and regulatory agency standards, including quality assurance and licensure requirements within the service lines
- Consistently accountable for the delivery of quality outcomes for patient satisfaction, employee satisfaction and physician satisfaction.
- Serves routinely as Administrator-on-call, responsible for hospital wide administrative issues on a 24 hour basis during on-call periods, and at command center during disaster situations.
- Participates as an active member of various medical center committees.
- Responsible for evaluating the performances of the management staff within the division.
- Serves as liaison with the medical center's Chairmen and Chief Medical Officer.
Financial Management:
- Maintains accountability for efficient and appropriate use of hospital resources. Plans appropriate, effective budgets that are consistent with the financial objectives of the medical center.
- Assist directors and managers in preparation of department operating and capital budgets, based upon criteria supported by volume and expense projections, cost/benefit analysis, operating procedures and other relevant information. Monitor variances and discrepancies.
- Identifies, implements and recommends ways to reduce and control expenses, as well as enhance revenues in the hospital.
- Monitors monthly fiscal reports, using this information to change departmental practices when appropriate. 5. Provides a cost-effective environment while maintaining high quality care.
Planning:
- Explore, encourage and integrate new or expanded business into medical center operations, collaborating with senior leadership and physicians, as appropriate.
- Formulates log and short range goals and objectives for areas of responsibility, assuring alignment and integration with the overall hospital objectives and strategic plans.
- Develops and directs new programs and services for the organization. Works closely with all operating functions of the organization to ensure continuity of programming and services.
Qualifications
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Master's degree.
- Minimum of 10 years management and 5-10 years procedure-based experience.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:
- Nursing or other Clinical background a plus.
