The Sup, Path Asst/Autopsy Services supervises the operations/systems for the performance of anatomic Pathology procedures to ensure the timely processing and reporting of anatomic specimens, including supervision of the Pathologist Assistants and Autopsy Services. Develops, implements, and maintains all departmental policies and workflows under the guidance of administrative leadership and the Director of Anatomic Pathology.
Responsibilities
A day in the life of a Supervisor, Pathology Assistant - Autopsy Services at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
- Works with the Department Chair, Director of Anatomic Pathology and the Administrative Director in the planning and implementation of objectives for the Section.
- Ensures the smooth operation of the anatomic Pathology grossing process; including the proper receipt, accessioning, examination and result reporting of surgical specimens.
- Responsible for the quality of work of the employees assigned to the section, including, but not limited to, assessment of standards of dictation, tissue dissection, tissue fixation and photography.
- Prepares the section for on-site inspections and completes inspection accreditation reports for pertinent agencies.
- Plans and organizes work to provide an organized and efficient workload. Ensures that the work performed in the department is completed in a timely manner.
- Prepares daily, weekend, holiday, vacation, and on-call schedules for the area. Arranges per diem Pathologist Assistant coverage when necessary. Maintains and approves time and attendance through Peoplesoft scheduling.
- Implements and enforces Departmental and Hospital policies. Conducts meetings with the Pathologist Assistants to communicate pertinent information.
- Supervises the orientation and in-service education of new and existing personnel assigned to the section, and appraises and counsels employees assigned to the section to improve overall job performance in conjunction with laboratory administration.
- Works closely with Histotechnicians, Pathologists, clerks and transcribers to ensure the timely and accurate reporting of all Anatomic Pathology specimens.
- Responsible for the care and function and maintenance of the equipment in the grossing rooms and frozen section/tissue procurement areas, including adequate availability of supplies and cleanliness needed in the performance of gross anatomic dissection.
- Performs, under the supervision of the Pathologists, gross description and dissection of surgical specimens. Responsible for updating grossing templates, as needed, with assistance from Pathologist.
- Arranges and collates clinical data for autopsy/surgical specimens, including such items as radiological information, operating reports, etc. to assist the Pathologists in preparing the preliminary anatomic diagnoses. The Pathologist who signs the official document subjects the diagnosis to final review.
- Interfaces with the HUMC clinical and research departments to handle request for tissue and interfaces with laboratory clerical personnel in call clerical duties related to tissue procurement and required protocols
- Provides Pathologists and Pathologist assistants with procurement protocols relevant to specific cases, and tissue types.
- Prepares and procures tissue samples according to protocol requirements and accepted tissue procurement technique and maintains appropriate records of all procured tissue.
- Coordinates and trains Pathologist assistants in proper tissue procurement techniques, record keeping and shipping.
- Assists the Pathologist at the performance of the prosection, including external examination, in situ inspection, evisceration, dissection, recording of data, dictation of descriptive information, and any such material relating to gross autopsy findings.
- Assists the Pathologist in procuring autopsy material for tumor banking/tissue procurement and such bioanalytic procedures as microbiological cultures, blood and serum analysis, chemical and toxicological testing, etc.
- Assists proper restoration of body for release to the funeral director, including notification of such biological hazards as contagious disease or radioactivity.
- Assists the Pathologists in examining and preparing surgical specimens, including assuring correct logging and numbering of surgical specimens and cassettes.
- Assists, under the supervision of the Pathologist, in selection and preparation of tissue blocks and sections for intraoperative cytologic touch preparations and histologic examination, including frozen and permanent sections.
- Photographs, as directed by the Pathologist, the body, individual organs, or other such items are pertinent to obtaining complete and useful records of gross autopsy and surgical Pathology findings.
- Assists, initiates, institutes, and accomplishes other related duties and procedures as may be designated by the supervising Pathologist.
- Maintains tissue grossing and procurement areas in a safe, clean and orderly condition.
- Attends continuing education programs when possible.
- Lifts a minimum of 30lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 70lbs and stands a minimum of 5 hours a day. Will rotate weekends, holidays, days, evenings, and nights as required. May have exposure to diseased organs, tissue, noxious odors from diseased bodies and penetrating odors of preservative chemicals.
- Performs other duties of the department as requested up to and including working on the bench during staffing shortages.
- Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
Qualifications
- Formal PA training/degree or equivalent.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience as a hospital-based Pathology Assistant and experience in tissue banking/procurement demonstrating increasing levels of responsibility.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient computer skills that may include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.
- Masters of Science in Pathologists¿ Assistant.
- Lifts a minimum of 30lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 70lbs and stands a minimum of 5 hours a day. Wil
