The Child Life/ Creative Arts Supervisor is a member of the department leadership team and works under the direction of the Manager of Social Work at Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC). This position will work with other department leadership, both in-patient and out-patient, on a daily basis to ensure that high quality and collaborative services are provided to support the psychosocial needs of patients and families. This role will make certain that child life services are consistent with the policies, procedures and standards of the department and will oversee and supervise departmental activities, child life specialists as well as the provide child life services to multiple areas within the hospital. Serves as a resource to and collaborate with others to advance the department and hospital mission and vision.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Supervisor, Child Life & Creative Arts at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

 

1. Assists with managing the day-to-day operations of the child life/ creative arts therapy department.
2. Supports staff in providing appropriate support to the clinical care team as well to patients and family members.
3. Serves as a role model, providing child life services to patients and family members, including developmentally-appropriate therapeutic activities, education, procedural preparation, coping facilitation, and support as it relates to their illness and medical treatment, modeling care for other child life specialists.
4. Maintains knowledge of Child Life standards of practice and hospital policies; collaborating with the Manager to develop new policies and procedures as needed.
5. Supervises patient care activities including the department staffing plan, shift coverage and payroll; Manages team schedules and relief needs, including the departmental and relief calendars.
6. Responsible for interviewing, hiring, training, evaluating and coaching of child life personnel. Collaborates with the Manager as needed.
7. Responsible for the annual performance evaluations; completes and delivers employee performance appraisals. Works with manger  to effectively provide performance feedback to professional staff on an ongoing basis to achieve staff development and staff satisfaction. Initiates disciplinary action as appropriate.
8. Participates, as requested, on cross-organizational teams, committees and special projects both internal and external to the organization.
9. Demonstrates personal and professional growth and expertise by remaining active with the Association of Child Life Professionals (ACLP).
10. Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
11. Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

1. Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
2. Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience.
3. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
4. Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.

 

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

1. Master's degree, Child Life.

 

Licenses and Certifications Required:

1. CCLS (Certified Child Life Specialist) - Valid national CCLS certification issued by the Child Life Council (CLC).
