Ensures the quality of care in the use of radiation-producing sources and imaging equipment and the protection of patients and staff from radiation.
Responsibilities
A day in the life of a Staff Physicist at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
- Develops treatment plans via computer and manual computations in order to determine the prescribed radiation dose. Acts as a resource for others physicists and dosimetrists performing plans.
- Monitors dosimetry & technical staff performance in computing treatment time to deliver prescribed therapeutic radiation dose in coordination with the technical coordinator.
- Performs initial audit/review of patient treatment plans generated by physicists or dosimetrists. Checks for accuracy and appropriateness of treatment.
- Performs weekly audit/review of patient treatment charts to ensure accuracy of treatment delivery.
- Directs and participates, as necessary, in the planning of molds, casts and immobilization devices.
- Directs and participates in planning the fabrication of compensating filters, custom shields, wedges and other beam modifying devices.
- Calibrates radiation therapy equipment according to the established procedures and maintains proper records. Supervises less senior physicists in the calibration of equipment.
- Provides assistance in preparation of applicators of radioisotopes for low-dose rate (LDR) brachytherapy under the guidance of Radiation Oncologist. Performs radiation surveys to ensure proper protection of individuals in the vicinity of the patient containing brachytherapy sources. Maintains proper records.
- Provides assistance in the operating room for LDR brachytherapy procedures. Performs LDR planning including Eye-plaques and Y90 radio-embolizations.
- Prepares computer generated treatment plans for High-dose rate (HDR) remote afterloading Brachytherapy procedures and captures relevant billing codes. Performs calibration of HDR sources and quality assurance on HDR treatment unit and applicators. Assists Radiation Oncologist in the delivery of the patient treatment. Performs radiation surveys of patient, applicators and HDR treatment room environs as per state/NRC regulations. Maintains proper records.
- Prepares computer generated treatment plans for Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) (including Gamma Knife) and Radiotherapy (SRT) program. Assists Therapists & Radiation Oncologists in the delivery of the patient treatment. Maintains proper records.
- Prepares computer generated treatment plans for Total Body Irradiation (TBI) procedures. Acquires measurements necessary to generate the treatment plan. Captures the related billing charges. Performs calibration and quality assurance required for these procedures. Performs in-vivo dosimetry and generates the necessary reports. Assists Therapists & Radiation Oncologists in the assessment of delivery of the patient treatment. Maintains proper records.
- Performs Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) and Special procedure patient specific quality assurance in accordance with departmental policy and procedures. Generates the attendant reports. Maintains proper records.
- Prepares computer generated treatment plans for Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT) procedures. Acquires measurements necessary to generate the treatment plan. Captures related billing codes. Performs calibration and quality assurance required for these procedures. Assists Dosimetrists, Therapists & Radiation Oncologists in the assessment of delivery of the patient treatment. Maintains proper records.
- Participates in the activities of the Quality Improvement in Radiation Oncology Department.
- Participates in acceptance testing & commissioning of new or replacement equipment in the Department of Radiation Oncology.
- Participates in acceptance testing & commissioning of new or upgraded treatment planning systems in Department of Radiation Oncology.
- Performs radiation surveys, survey meters and ion chamber calibrations, wipe tests, area monitoring, isotope inventory control, etc., according to the established procedures. Maintains proper records.
- Provides instruction on radiation safety to staff members as instructed by the Director of Medical Physics.
- Keeps abreast of the evolving techniques in Radiation Therapy.
- Participates in the evaluation of competencies for less senior physics staff, dosimetrists and technical staff.
- Submits (posts) applicable charges (bills) for all physicist-performed plans and special procedures.
- Demonstrates knowledge and skill in the operation of the record and verify systems.
- Establishes goals for self-development, recognizing personal strengths and limitations.
- Coordinates and implements special assignments as requested by Director of Medical Physics.
- Participates fully in the Medical Physics Residency program as a mentor, faculty member, etc., as assigned by the Director of Medical Physics.
Qualifications
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Master's degree in radiation physics or related field.
- Three years of clinical experience.
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:
- M.S. in physics/radiation physics, or
- Ph.D. in physics/radiation physics or related field and 2 years clinical experience.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
- Certification by the American Board of Radiology or American Board of Medical Physics or Canadian College of Medical Physics or Board eligible (as defined by the ABR).
