The Risk Management Specialist coordinates and participates in a variety of roles associated with the operation of the Medical Center's enterprise risk management functions, including ONElink event reporting system, incident investigation and claims management. This position utilizes risk management strategies to reduce liability exposures and limit financial impact for the Medical Center and all team members.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Risk Management Specialist at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Coordinates on-site assessment of actual and potential risks within the Medical Center, assessing liability and probability of legal action, and recommends appropriate actions to minimize institutional risks.
  • Maintains ONElink event reporting system in accordance with hospital accreditation requirements, and prepares and presents a variety of statistical reports as required.
  • Reviews and investigates ONElink event reports and related clinical documentation, and recommends corrective actions as appropriate.
  • Serves as a resource for all levels of team members for any enterprise risk management issues during regular shifts and on an On Call basis.
  • Manages enrollment and terminations, claims history requests for professional liability insurance for clinical providers and any General Liability claims.
  • Collaborates with the Medical Center's Quality/Patient Safety Dept to identify, review and make appropriate recommendations concerning quality and patient safety issues, as well as participate in the Root Cause Analysis process.
  • Meets with the Patient Experience representative to evaluate potential claims for professional and general liability, and recommends follow-up and settlement of claims as appropriate.
  • Participates in the network Early Event Resolution Committee for any identified claims, as appropriate.
  • Acts as the liaison between insurance broker, third party administrator (TPA) representatives. and Legal team to communicate Notice of Claims and Potentially Compensable Events.
  • Assists in the development of preventive risk management programs to minimize potential and actual claims and liabilities and future risk.
  • Develops and conducts regular Enterprise Risk Management training programs stressing proper documentation and encouraging event reporting to reduce the Medical Center's liability exposure.
  • Participates in Administrative Rounding to encourage patient and team member safety as part of the Medical Center's Safety program.
  • Prepares reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.
  • Maintains final supporting documents of the FDA Recall notices.
  • Attends various committees supporting HMH Enterprise Risk Management initiatives.
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
  • Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

 

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Bachelor's degree with 5 years healthcare enterprise risk management experience.
  • Legal support or insurance/claims investigation and settlement may be accepted with other additional applicable healthcare management experience.
  • Knowledge of legal and regulatory requirements related to health care enterprise risk management.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

  • RN or related clinical experience.
  • CPHRM certification within one year of employment.
