The Research Billing Specialist is responsible for coordinating the clinical trial billing, collection and reconciliation process as well as assisting in the day-to-day department finance operations.
Responsibilities
A day in the life of a Research Billing Specialist at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
- Invoices and track payments from clinical trial sponsors for patient visits and other study related costs as outlined in the clinical trial budgets and contracts.
- Performs payments reconciliation to clinical research.
- Processes payment requests for patient reimbursement and to third party vendors in accordance with HMH policy.
- Serves as a financial resource for clinical site staff and research patients.
- Utilizes CTMS or Financial software to track clinical trial revenue.
- Attends finance meetings and assists other departments with patient account discrepancies.
- Assists with the preparation of reports requested by the Finance department.
- Troubleshoots internal department billing processes.
- Conducts annual billing training for research staff and on an as-needed basis for new hire employee department orientation.
- Provides cross-coverage with Research Billing Compliance Specialist including but not limited to: a. Reviews/reports/transfers charges posted in hospital billing system by reviewing forms and clinical trial budget/contracts in conjunction with the DSA reconciliation process b. Prepares monthly reports capturing and applying research payment to aged accounts to the hospital and to third party vendors. c. Maintains DSA forms and documentation associated with clinical patient accounts.
- Resolves outstanding patient bills/disputes with the Finance department Develops and maintains tracking metrics for research finance.
- Maintains strong lines of communication with ancillary departments and outside vendors.
- Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
- Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
Qualifications
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Bachelor`s Degree in Accounting, Sciences or equivalent experience and High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), GED equivalent programs, and/or other Vocational degrees/certificates.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience with billing/coding and/or financial/business operations.
- Experience with billing and collection processes.
- Ability to analyze complex situations and identify solutions and make appropriate determinations.
- Ability to maintain professional demeanor and relationships with team members from all levels of an organization.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 7. Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:
- Experience with oncology and/or research.
Licenses and Certifications Preferred:
- SOCRA-Certified Clinical Research Professional (CCRP) and/or Certified Clinical Research Associate (CCRA) and/or Certified Clinical Research Coordinator (CCRC).
- Medical Billing/Coding certification.

Compensation
Minimum rate of $27.13 Hourly
HMH is committed to pay equity and transparency for our team members. The posted rate of pay in this job posting is a reasonable good faith estimate of the minimum base pay for this role at the time of posting in accordance with the New Jersey Pay Transparency Act and does not reflect the full value of our market-competitive total rewards package.

- Geographic Location: Cost of living and market rates for the specific location.
- Internal Equity: Compensation is determined in a manner consistent with compensation ranges for similar roles within the organization.
- Budget and Grant Funding: Departmental budgets and any grant funding associated with the job position may impact the pay that can be offered.
Some jobs may also be eligible for performance-based incentives, bonuses, or commissions not reflected in the starting rate. Certain positions may also be eligible for shift differentials for work performed on evening, night, or weekend shifts.
