The Perinatal Safety Nurse is a registered professional nurse who demonstrates clinical and systems expertise through advanced education, knowledge, and skills in Obstetrics. Collaborates with the medical and nursing teams to promote a culture of patient safety and adherence to national clinical standards. Serves as a visible and recognized advocate for safety locally and in the network. Provides clinical advice and coordinates instruction to the nursing team, families, and other health care providers using advanced knowledge and skills. Ensures the safe delivery of patient care and supports the mission, vision, and goals of Hackensack Meridian Health (HMH).

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a patient safety advocate and clinical role model in Obstetrics (OB) by:
    •  Keeping abreast of changing national standards of clinical practice and safety. Disseminates pertinent specialty-related information.
    • Assisting in creating and maintaining quality through new initiatives and quality improvement projects and research. 
    • Participating in and coordinating safety and quality-related activities and programs. 
    • Participating in and contributing to clinical care review activities. 
    • Compiling, analyzing, and communicating specialty-specific metrics. 

 

  • 2. Monitors Clinical outcome by:
    • Encouraging team members to identify and report adverse events and near misses.
    • Contributing to Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) review. 
    • Performing collaborative reviews of clinical care and incorporates improvement opportunities into educational efforts. 
    • Collaborating with appropriate departments and OB team to coordinate briefings, debriefing, and RCA-related activities. 
    • Maintaining the database of all clinical indicators collected and reviewed in the department. 

 

  • Facilitates interdisciplinary communication and education by: 
    • Coordinating simulation program. 
    • Collaborating with educators and leadership to promote educational programs and clinical drills. 
    • Facilitating and supporting teamwork- training programs. 
    • Promoting the adoption of specialty-specific best practices. 
    • Acting as a resource and mentor.
    • In collaboration with the Team, developing, reviewing, and revising policies and/or procedures related to the Obstetrical/Maternity Patient Population. 
    • Monitoring educational outcomes through Performance Improvement (PI) activities, reviews, and PI data results. 
    • Collaborating with the Obstetrical team on educational programs. 

 

  • Identifies the needs of the patient population served and modifies and delivers care that is specific to those needs (i.e. age, culture, hearing and /or visually impaired, etc.). This process includes communicating with the patient, parent, and/or primary caregiver(s) at their level (i.e. developmental/age, educational, literacy, etc.). 

 

  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned. 
  • Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Master's degree in Nursing. 
  • Minimum of 3 years of acute care nursing in obstetrics. 
  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and systems thinking skills. 

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

  • Minimum of 1 year as an instructor and experience with curriculum development, evaluative methods, and contact hour application. 
  • Background in nursing research. 
  • Professional certification in an area of clinical practice. 

Licenses and Certifications Required:

  • Current valid NJ State Professional Registered Nurse license. 
  • Maintains American Heart Association Basic Life Support HCP Certification. 

Licenses and Certifications Preferred:

  • Maintains Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Certification. 
  • Maintain Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Certification.

Compensation
Minimum rate of $113,609.60 Annually

HMH is committed to pay equity and transparency for our team members. The posted rate of pay in this job posting is a reasonable good faith estimate of the minimum base pay for this role at the time of posting in accordance with the New Jersey Pay Transparency Act and does not reflect the full value of our market-competitive total rewards package.

The starting rate of pay is provided for informational purposes only and is not a guarantee of a specific offer.   • Labor Market Data: Compensation is benchmarked against market data to ensure competitiveness.
  • Experience: Years of relevant work experience.
  • Education and Certifications: Level of education attained, including specialized certifications, credentials, completed apprenticeship programs or advanced training.
  • Skills: Demonstrated proficiency in relevant skills and competencies.
  • Geographic Location: Cost of living and market rates for the specific location.
  • Internal Equity: Compensation is determined in a manner consistent with compensation ranges for similar roles within the organization.
  • Budget and Grant Funding: Departmental budgets and any grant funding associated with the job position may impact the pay that can be offered.

Some jobs may also be eligible for performance-based incentives, bonuses, or commissions not reflected in the starting rate. Certain positions may also be eligible for shift differentials for work performed on evening, night, or weekend shifts.

In addition to our compensation for full-time and part-time (20+ hours/week) job positions, HMH offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, vision, paid leave, tuition reimbursement, and retirement benefits.
