Overview

The Nurse Manager Level II position is a Nurse Manager progressive Leadership role which under the guidance of the Administrative Director, is the designated leader for operational responsibilities of assigned multiple Patient Care Units/ departments. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the day to day operations of the patient care units with 24/7 accountability. Mentoring and orienting Nurse Managers Level I to their role as well as developing progressive initiatives in addressing all unit functions including adherence to all policies and procedures relevant to the Department of Patient Care and organizationally. Assesses, plans, implements, monitors and evaluates nursing practice and the nursing care delivery system within a cost-contained environment and ensures that cost effective, quality nursing care is administered to all patients in compliance with the standards of all regulatory and accrediting agencies. All functions will be guided by the requirement of external regulating and accrediting bodies and the organization's performance improvement plan. Nature and Scope of the Nursing Environment: The current and anticipated health care environment demands that nurses and other health care providers shift their focus to planned, patient centered care. Nurse leaders are being granted significant new accountability for activities which enhance revenues and which must be managed without compromising patient care quality. The organization's nursing leaders set expectations, develops plans and implement procedures to assess and improve the quality of the organization's governance, management, clinical and support services in collaboration with Hospital Performance improvement.

Responsibilities

  • The Nurse Manager Level II contributes to the actualization of the philosophy, mission, goals and objectives of Nursing Services at Hackensack University Medical Center with the Nurse Executive Council.
    • Promotes collaboration between nursing and other departments to increase the organizations effectiveness and efficiency.
    • Participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of nursing goals and objectives as they relate to patient care.
    • Collaborates with the Director of Nursing in developing and evaluating the effectiveness of the nursing care delivery system utilized in departments.
    • Collaborates with the Directors and Practice Councils in defining the standards of clinical practice.
    • Monitors Standards of Practice to ensure compliance with codes of internal and external regulatory and accrediting agencies including:
      • Joint commission ii. NJS and Federal Codes (i.e.: DOH, OSHA)
      • Professional Review Organizations
    • Ensures adherence to legal requirements relating to:
      • Risk Management
      • Patient Bill of Rights
      • Other Regulatory Agencies
    • Directs the evaluation of all patient related incidents.
    • Directs the monitoring and evaluation of nursing standards of practice, policies, procedures, protocols and guidelines to determine compliance with standards.
    • Monitors and evaluates budgetary and financial priorities as they relate to unit function and delivery of patient care.
    • Monitors and evaluates all unit based and overall quality and safety indicators
    • Collaborates with Nurse Managers to develop and maintain on-going unit based activities.
    • Supports and promotes the Magnet Philosophy throughout the organization.
  • The Nurse Manager Level II contributes to the improvement of organizational and nursing service outcomes related to quality patient care.
    • Develops and implements processes to support multidisciplinary performance projects.
    • Participates with other departments in the development of processes to improve communication and working relationships with nursing.
    • Collaborates with other members of the health care team in the delivery of patient care (i.e.: Pharmacy, Social Services, Dietary)
  • The Nurse Manager Level II demonstrates expert leadership skills.
    • Establishes and maintains a collaborative and mutually supportive relationship with all partners in care.
    • Maintains a professional relationship with:
      • Hospital Administrators
      • Medical Staff
      • Department Heads
    • Utilizes effective communication skills
    • Represents Nursing Services on Hospital Committees as designated by the Chief Nursing and Patient Care Officer.
    • Is responsive to staff needs and offers guidance in solving practice issues when consulted through the performance process.
    • Responsible for own professional growth
    • Participating in development and implementation of programs related to performance improvement activities.
    • Collaborating with the Director of Clinical Education in identifying the learning needs of personnel and assists with the development of a plan and/or program to meet those needs.
    • Recognizing and developing the leadership potential of staff members.

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree-MSN, MBA
  • 4 plus years of Managerial experience
  • NJ State Professional Registered Nurse License required 

  • Nurse Executive Certification required 

  • AHA Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification required

  • Previous PACU Manager experience preferred

  • Research and publishing experience

  • Recruitment techniques
  • Interviewing techniques experience, including individual & team interviewing skills/techniques and successful interviewing programs
  • Knowledge of hiring policies & procedures from the organizational HR Department
  • Knowledge of Performance Improvement skills and tools
  • Ability to promote intradepartmental/interdepartmental communication
  • Systems thinking knowledge as an approach to analysis and decision making
  • Knowledge of the impact of IT on patient care & delivery systems
