Under the direction of the Dir, Cancer Center Operations/Clinical Services and Chair, Radiation Oncology, the Mgr, Radiation Oncology Srvc is a part of the cancer center management team. This position works at the direction of the Dir, Cancer Center Operations and Clinical Services to provide oversight of program development, staff training and overall treatment environment for physicians, staff, patients and their families. This role is responsible for the organization and development of high performing teams and oversight of all technical, clinical and clinical support services personnel (i.e. radiation therapist, nursing, clerical and scheduling coordinators). This role is accountable for meeting the operational, financial and quality objectives of the clinical and clinical support teams and identifies opportunities to implement best practice approaches and introduce innovations to better address needs across the continuum of care.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Manager, Radiation Oncology at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Provides extraordinary compassionate care to all we care for and absolute teamwork with our colleagues.

  • Develops strong partnerships with staff, patients, families, and physicians to collaborate effectively on ways to continuously improve programs, outcomes, and patient/staff/provider satisfaction.
  • Guides external partnerships in support of these activities.
  • Manages and leads the technical and clinical staff in Radiation Therapy, Nursing, Clerical and Scheduling services to provide excellent clinical service to patients and physicians.
  • Manages and leads clinical support services (administrative, scheduling, medical record management, reimbursement, cash collection, denial management and facilities).
  • Manages and leads cash collection, denial management and reimbursement related activities with the assistance of Director of Registration, Director of Medical Physics and Chairman of Radiation Oncology.
  • When necessary leads and manages all appeals related activities with insurance companies and their medical directors.
  • Leads and supports adoption of national best practice guidelines that meet physician and patient needs, with special focus on closing gaps in service and outcomes.
  • Provides leadership of health education initiatives, including development or update of health education materials, training of staff on effectively teaching patients and families regarding care management.
  • Assists the Dir, Cancer Center Operations with developing, enhancing, and implementing policies, procedures, and workflows for care management processes.
  • Coordinates all responses to complaints received about the service.
  • Ensures the maintenance of technical and clinical proficiency of the simulator therapists, both for simulation and CT planning by ensuring that the radiation therapists understand and follow the simulation procedures of the department.
  • Ensures the maintenance of technical and clinical proficiency of radiation therapists on treatment machine by executing new and/or difficult treatment set-ups with them and ensuring they understand department procedure.
  • Coordinates the initial treatment/set-ups for all patients on assigned machine and ensures that radiation therapists maintain accuracy and precision throughout patient's course of treatment. Reports discrepancies to Director of Physics, Dir, Cancer Center Operations and/or Radiation Oncologist as appropriate.
  • Interprets treatment plans and is able to assist radiation therapists with implementation of treatment plan.
  • Ensures radiation therapists maintain an accurate treatment chart and ensures the information in the record and verify system matches information in the treatment chart.
  • Ensures the maintenance of nursing proficiency in appropriate procedures and with all necessary certifications.
  • Supports the Dir, Cancer Center Operations and Clinical Services with ensuring the maintenance of accreditations by partnering with Director of Medical Physics and Chairman of Radiation Oncology.
  • Manages the Continuous Quality Improvement program.
  • Ensures that all daily and weekly quality control tasks are performed on the equipment and reports problems to the physicist and/or service engineer; ensures problems are resolved promptly.
  • Instructs new staff and students in the operation of treatment machines and set-up procedures.
  • Assumes the responsibility of administrator and demonstrates in-depth knowledge of the radiation oncology specific electronic medical record and record and verify system.
  • Observes and practices departmental guidelines for radiation safety measures with respect to patients and technical staff.
  • Assists the Dir, Cancer Center Operations with maintaining contracts, negotiating, and holding vendors to terms of agreement.
  • Monitors and practices infection control measures as set forth.
  • Oversees on-treatment patient scheduling by scheduling staff for treatment machines, simulator and CT scans.
  • Supports the Dir, Cancer Center Operations with coordinating operational and capital purchases of all supplies required for patient care delivery.
  • Supports the Dir, Cancer Center Operations with identifying purchases using cost-effective strategies that affect staff functionality and patient safety.
  • Assists the Dir, Cancer Center Operations to establish supply budget for radiation oncology on an ongoing basis.
  • Performs budget variance analysis for operational and labor expenses.
  • Coordinate weekly chart review with various disciplines of the department meeting regulatory and state requirements. (I.e. NJ Department of Health (DEP), American College of Radiology (ACR), and The Joint Commission (TJC)). Reports compliance issues to the Director of Operations and Clinical Services..
  • Seeks opportunities to perform research with publications and formal conference presentations.
  • Monitors monthly dosimeter reports and communicates any variances to the Radiation Safety Officer, Director of Medical Physics and the Director of Operations and Clinical Services.
  • Provides ongoing education to staff through in-services, seminars, and vendor demonstrations to fulfill mandatory educational requirements to enhance the delivery of superior patient care.
  • Coordinates Radiation Dosimeter film badge distribution to departmental staff following state regulations and Medical Center policy under the direction of the Radiation Safety Officer and the Director of Medical Physics.
  • Executes annual performance appraisals for all immediate reports. (i.e., radiation therapists, schedulers and nurses.)
  • Establishes staffing effectiveness patterns and monitors to meet patient care needs; provides clinical support as needed.
  • Identifies the needs of the patient population served and modifies and delivers care that is specific to those needs (i.e., age, culture, language, hearing and/or visually impaired, etc.). This process includes communicating with the patient, parent, and/or primary caregiver(s) at their level (developmental/age, educational, literacy, etc.).
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
  • Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Ten (10) years of experience as a Radiation Therapist in an active and advanced Cancer Center.
  • Five (5) years of total experience surrounding supervisor/management experience.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

  • Bachelor's degree in Radiologic Sciences/Therapy or Healthcare Management.
  • Previous management experience.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

  • Current New Jersey license as a Radiation Therapy Technologist.
  • Registered by the AART in Radiation Therapy.

  • Regular contact with Medical Center personnel, physicians, patients and visitors.

Working Conditions:

  • Lifts a minimum of 5 lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 40 lbs. and stands a minimum of 6 hours a day.

Compensation
Minimum rate of $131,144.00 Annually

Some jobs may also be eligible for performance-based incentives, bonuses, or commissions not reflected in the starting rate. Certain positions may also be eligible for shift differentials for work performed on evening, night, or weekend shifts.
