The Lead Biorepository Tech is responsible for performing Biorepository related processing and assists with basic and translational research related to biomarker discovery. This role uses scientific knowledge, approaches and methods that frequently involve tissue banking-related experiments requiring monitoring and analyses and properly manages processing of prospective and retrospective patient tissues. This role requires processing and banking tissue, including but not limited to identification, archiving, storage, retrieval and shipping of tissue specimens (solid and liquid). Sophisticated testing technology is employed within appropriate quality control parameters. This role involves administrative duties. This role will maintain communication with Biorepositories within the HMH network.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Lead Biorepository Tech at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Assists in planning and implementing objectives for the Biorepository.
  • Assists in overall development, training, motivation, and performance appraising and counseling of personnel in the Biorepository.
  • Coordinates with Pathology and network clinics for handling, procurement and processing of human specimens.
  • Coordinates with HMH clinical teams, investigators, network biorepository sites and external collaborators for generating workflows and SOP for external projects
  • Works with potentially infectious material in a BSL2 environment.
  • Ensures the accuracy and review of all Biorepository equipment assuring quality control measures are performed, recorded and maintained according to standards.
  • Documents equipment malfunction and adverse event reporting: takes appropriate corrective action when instruments, refrigerators, or freezers function improperly.
  • Performs equipment calibrations and maintenance with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrates the ability to identify instrument problems and handles troubleshooting and documentation according to SOP. Notifies site Manager.
  • Maintains the care and function of laboratory equipment.
  • May perform payroll functions and finance assistance when needed.
  • Participates in the orientation, training, and in-service education of new and existing personnel in the Biorepository.
  • Performs all computer system functions necessary to achieve the timely registration, ordering, testing and storage of data for the Biorepository project.
  • Assists in developing appropriate work distribution schedules to include daily work, holiday and weekend schedules.
  • Manipulation of Liquid Handling and Automation Instruments to generate scripts, prompts adapted from protocols and workflow
  • Performs the duties of Bioinformatics and Data Analyst and is responsible for running the section when required.
  • Proficient in the use of Structured Query Languages for building, maintaining and extracting biospecimen data from relational databases.
  • Coordinates data cleaning, de identification and interpretation of clinical data collected from biospecimen samples adhering to Hospital guidelines of HIPAA and HITECH.
  • Serves as on site Biorepository Honest Broker, being the liaison between the researcher, identifiable specimen and patient information.
  • Maintains organized record keeping of physical and electronic research requests, consents and chain of custody.
  • Monitors and maintains network biorepository sites` laboratory inventory and purchases.
  • Implements and oversees quality assurance and quality control procedures for sample processing within the Biorepository.
  • Develops and maintains quality control documentation, including but not limited to batch records, sample logs, and test results.
  • Identifies and investigates deviations, non-conformities and quality issues, and proposes corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs).
  • Collaborates in implementing quality management systems and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
  • Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology or a related field.
  • Minimum 3 or more years of experience in tissue handling experience in a laboratory or clinical setting.
  • Excellent analytical skills .
  • Ability to work with potentially infectious material and understanding of how to work in a BSL2 environment.
  • Flexible in work schedule. Must be available to stay late to process samples as needed.
  • Ability to work well with others in a team environment.
  • Good organization and record-keeping skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

  • Master's degree.
  • Graduate level training on bioscience discipline.

Compensation
Minimum rate of $34.65 Hourly

HMH is committed to pay equity and transparency for our team members. The posted rate of pay in this job posting is a reasonable good faith estimate of the minimum base pay for this role at the time of posting in accordance with the New Jersey Pay Transparency Act and does not reflect the full value of our market-competitive total rewards package.

The starting rate of pay is provided for informational purposes only and is not a guarantee of a specific offer. Posted hourly rates may be stated as an annual salary in the offer and posted annual salaries may be stated as an hourly rate in the offer, depending on the level and nature of the job duties and credentials of the candidate.   • Experience: Years of relevant work experience.

  • Skills: Demonstrated proficiency in relevant skills and competencies.
  • Geographic Location: Cost of living and market rates for the specific location.
  • Internal Equity: Compensation is determined in a manner consistent with compensation ranges for similar roles within the organization.
  • Budget and Grant Funding: Departmental budgets and any grant funding associated with the job position may impact the pay that can be offered.

Some jobs may also be eligible for performance-based incentives, bonuses, or commissions not reflected in the starting rate. Certain positions may also be eligible for shift differentials for work performed on evening, night, or weekend shifts.
