Overview

The APN NICU Research Quality Specialist Nurse is a registered professional nurse who demonstrates clinical and systems expertise through advanced education, knowledge and skills in perinatal and neonatal Nursing. Collaborates with the medical and nursing teams to promote a culture of patient safety and adherence to national clinical standards. Serves as a visible and recognized advocate for safety locally and the network. Provides clinical advice and coordinates instruction to the nursing team, families, and other healthcare providers using advanced knowledge and skills. Ensures the safe delivery of patient care and supports the mission, vision and goals of Hackensack Meridian Health (HMH).

Responsibilities

Serves as a patient safety advocate and clinical role model in Neonatal by: Keeping abreast of changing national standards of clinical practice and safety. Disseminates pertinent speciality-related information. Works as a liaison between Program directors, Departments, Hospital and other outside entities. Demonstrates patient advocacy, which assures patients rights to privacy and confidentiality. Helps in coordination of program promotion. Oversees the creation of quality initiatives and quality improvement projects and research in ensuring alignment with VON, Children¿s Hospital Association, network & local multidisciplinary teams & mentors all multidisciplinary team members throughout the projects Actively participates in multidisciplinary rounds. Evaluate and monitor new neonatal products, equipment and supplies by setting up small tests of change processes to ensure safe outcomes. Participating in and coordinating safety and quality-related activities and programs, example, one link reviews for the Children¿s Hospital to identify patterns, and failed system and process issues and competency and educational issues.. Participating in and contributing to clinical care review activities. Compiling, analyzing and communicating specialty-specific metrics. Liaison between the state department of health (DOH) and infants in the NICU. Responsible for updating the state for the current placement of infants and need to discuss plans of care with attending physicians and need for follow up.. Clinical role model and support by taking a patient assignment and/or going out on transport to stabilize and transport acute infants to HUMC Network when necessary. Identifies potential areas for research and collaborates with multidisciplinary team to design, conduct, and participate in appropriate research projects. Monitors and Ensures Positive Clinical Outcome by: Collaborates with physicians, nursing staff, and multidisciplinary team in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care for selected patients and their families. Functions as a clinical resource person for nursing staff, physicians, and multidisciplinary team in identifying problems and developing solutions to meet desired, measurable outcomes. Develops and maintains a communication system which ensures comprehensive and timely transmission of information to physicians, nursing staff, and the multidisciplinary team. Revises the plan of care in collaboration with the patient, family, physician, nursing staff, and other multidisciplinary staff members to meet desired outcomes. Monitors documentation in the medical record to ensure patient outcomes are achieved and maintained based on established standards of care. Establishes a system for coordinating the patient's care along the continuum, spanning each geographic area in which care is provided. Establishes a means of communicating and collaborating with the multidisciplinary team involved in the care of the patient population and conducts patient conferences. Identifies and implements strategies to ensure appropriate utilization of resources to achieve desired measurable outcomes. Collects, analyzes, and shares data to assess compliance with established guidelines/protocols that ensure achievement of positive patient outcomes. Educates the multidisciplinary team to ensure compliance with current established guidelines/protocols. Manages the patient's transition logs along the continuum and facilitates referrals to the appropriate healthcare provider or setting when applicable. Participates in the development of guidelines/protocols that are utilized in planning patient care and monitoring achievement of patient outcomes. Encouraging team members to identify and report adverse events and near misses. Reviewing outcomes from Vermont Oxford Network (VON) and disseminating that information to medical and nursing teams. Performs as the hospital liaison between VON and HMH. Facilitate and lead HUMC VON travel team to collaborate with international CQI NICU teams to develop evidence base SOC for the international NICU community.- Performing collaborative reviews of clinical care and incorporating improvement opportunities into educational efforts. Collaborating with appropriate departments and neonatal teams to coordinate briefings, debriefing and RCA-related activities. Maintaining the database of all clinical indicators collected and reviewed in the department and VON. Ensuring clinical competencies of equipment technicians and equipment cleaning according to guidelines. Working closely with Infection Prevention in maintenance of infectious processes within the NICU environment. Participates in professional activities (management meetings, conventions, workshops), organizes seminars, and participates in continuing education workshops to enhance professional practice for self and multidisciplinary team members. Coordinating with an education specialist. Collaborating with educators and leadership to promote educational programs and clinical drills. Facilitating and supporting teamwork-training programs Promoting the adoption of specialty-specific best practices. Acting as a resource and mentor. In collaboration with the team, developing, reviewing, and revising policies and/or procedures related to the Neonatal/perinatal patient population. Monitoring educational outcomes through Performance Improvement (PI) activities reviews and PI data results. Collaborating with the Neonatal team on educational programs. Collaborating with the NJ state Collaborative by attending monthly meetings and involved in developing projects based on evidence-based care for the neonatal population. Identifies the needs of the patient population served and modifies and delivers care that is specific to those needs (i.e., age, culture, hearing and or visually impaired, etc). This process includes communicating with the parent, and/or primary caregiver (s) at their level (i.e. developmental/age, educational, literacy, etc.) Developing teams to provide antenatal/bereavement support. Other duties and/or projects as assigned. Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior. Facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration with perinatal outreach within the network and hospitals, the NICU transports sick neonates to HUMC throughout the state of New Jersey.. The Perinatal outreach program includes twelve weeks of training for level 2 Special Care RN¿s that are brought to HUMC NICU to acquire competence to stabilize and care for critical neonates until the HUMC transport team arrives. Coordinates the HUMC Neonatal transport program to Allow NICU team members to safely travel by ambulance to other referring hospitals to stabilize and transport critical infants to NICU at HUMC thereby increasing and developing trusting partnerships with referring hospitals. Functions as Hackensack liaison with the New Jersey Department of Health to Follow-up on failed newborn metabolic screening. And Congenital Heart Defect screening.for NICU and newBorn nursery.Review charts of infants and collaborate with the neonatologist as to what metabolic test needs to be performed and update the state. Facilitate compliance of New Jersey department of health Birth certificate registration. Facilitates the interdisciplinary team to develop quality improvement activities within the unit and develop abstracts and articles for publication for the rest of the NICU community. 

 

Regional Outreach

 

  1. Hospitals designated as a CPC-Intensive or Regional Perinatal Center shall have an advanced practice nurse who is responsible for in-house and regional staff training and consultation in perinatal care.  The individual shall be a registered professional nurse with a master’s degree from a nationally recognized Neonatal Nursing Specialty or American Nurses Association.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  1. Master’s Degree in Nursing Advanced Nurse Practitioner credentials from an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program required or Doctorate Of Nursing Practice from an accredited School of Nursing.
  2. Minimum of 3 years of acute care nursing in perinatal/neonatal intensive care.
  3. Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and systems thinking skills.
  4. Proficient computer skills that may include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred

 

  1. Background in nursing research.
  2. Professional certification in an area of clinical practice.

 

Licenses and Certifications Required

  1. Current valid NJ State Professional Registered Nurse License.
  2. Advance Practice Nurse License for APNs
  3. Maintains American Heart Association Basic Life Support HCP Certification.
  4. Maintain Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Certification.

 

Licenses and Certifications Preferred:

 

  1. Maintain NRP instructor certification.
