Overview

This position interacts with all levels in the organization along with the Enterprise Risk Management team toward the goal of improving safe and trusted healthcare. The Intern, Risk Management handles tasks as assigned in various areas of the organization. This position provides support associated with the safe operation of the Medical Center¿s enterprise risk management functions, including ONElink event reporting system, event investigation, discovery and claims. The Intern will be working on various insurance matters, as well as assisting with claims and litigation matters on a day-to-day basis for the various lines of coverage for multiple sites within the Hackensack Meridian Health Care System

Please note: This internship is for Summer 2025.

Responsibilities

1. Participates in Rounding, Safety Huddles, and routine meetings with the site and network Risk Leaders with a focus on understanding organizational harm to include patient safety, team member safety as well as creating a meaningful experience for all across the organization.

2. Participate with key leaders of programs such as Emergency Management, Network Environmental Health and Safety, Team Health, Department of Patient Safety & Quality, as well as the Office of Patient Experience - working closely with those leaders to learn mitigation strategies, and programs to address identified risks.

3. In conjunction with the Risk Manager, the intern will investigate risk management events, reviewing and analyzing events in the ONElink event reporting system, assisting with proactive risk management educational initiatives and mitigation strategies that have an actual or potential impact/injury to patients, visitors and team members

4. In conjunction with the Risk Manager, the intern will investigate actual or potential claims upon receipt including: obtaining and sequestering evidence, obtaining visit history, obtaining pertinent medical records, searching for potential claim files, and obtaining insurance information.

5. Work with the Risk Manager in processes claims with the appropriate carrier(s) and broker within policy period;

6. Working with the Insurance team and TPA, will learn about the property and casualty insurance portfolio, will review loss runs reports and analyze trends; will work on various insurance matters, including professional liability, general liability, property and auto insurance matters; as well as processing potential claims and handling claims and litigation matters on a day-to-day basis for the various lines of coverage for multiple sites within the Hackensack Meridian Health Care System.

7. Assists in the process of accepting Subpoenas, and Summonses and Complaints; performs legal research as needed 8. Receives and investigates recall reports of medical device and product problems in collaboration with the Purchasing Dept; 9. Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior;

10. Must work independently with general guidance on a wide variety of special projects

11. All other duties and projects as assigned to assist the Enterprise Risk Management Department to maintain daily activities of the departments.

12. Assists department team members with daily operations as assigned.

13. Works on various projects as needed while gaining working knowledge of the organization and its functions.

14. Represents the Enterprise Risk Management Department on various medical center committees as assigned;

15. Participates in training of team members and in-services provided by the Enterprise Risk Management team;

16. Other duties and/or projects as assigned.

17. Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

1. University Student majoring in Risk Management or related studies.

2. Proficient in Google Suite;

3. Strong analytical, problem solving and communication skills;

4. Knowledge of legal and medical terminology;

5. Excellent technological skills and organizational skills
