Responsible for the following; provision of initial fitness orientations for new clients, monitoring fitness clients to ensure that clients utilize safe exercise techniques, taking vital signs upon request from clients, assisting clients in completing their exercise charts, monitoring the fitness center environment to ensure that it is safe and clean, participating in facility/department initiatives as assigned, and assisting with clerical tasks as requested.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of an Exercise Assistant at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

 

1. Performs initial exercise orientations for new clients. Performs initial fitness evaluations and orientations for all special needs clients entering the fitness center. Responsible for the progression of the special needs client transitions from physical therapy and/or cardiac rehab. Greets clients entering the center and offers assistance. Observes the activity in the fitness center by circulating on fitness floor and client interaction. Administers exercise treatment in accordance with PT and MD referral and restrictions. Demonstrates competence in graded exercise testing and counseling as it pertains to the individual needs of the client. Demonstrates safe and effective exercise practices while instructing clientele. Recognizes unsafe exercise practices and intervenes immediately. Monitors heart rate and blood pressure accurately. Leads group exercise activities as assigned. Monitors blood pressure accurately. Monitors clients heart rate accurately. Assists clients on and off machines as needed. Recognizes situations that require input of the exercise specialist, supervisor or medical attention and takes appropriate action.
2. Answers phone using department scripting. Prepares exercise charts for new clients as assigned. Collects payments according to department policies and procedures.
3. Ensures that gym and locker rooms are neat and organized. Eliminates safety hazards; reports housekeeping issues promptly. Clears towels from locker rooms as needed. Participates in regular equipment safety checks as requested. Cleans equipment as scheduled. Follows appropriate procedures for close-out as well as opening and closing the department.
4. Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
5. Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

1. High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), and/or GED equivalent programs.
2. Demonstrated interest in health and fitness. Knowledge in use of exercise equipment

 

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

1. College-degree in exercise field preferred or eligible.
2. Experience working in a fitness center. Entry level acceptable.

 

Licenses and Certifications Required:

1. AHA Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification. New Hires must obtain a CPR card within 30 days from start date and must provide proof to his/her leader.
