The Executive Director, Development, Oncology, will have responsibility for the leadership, management and implementation of fundraising efforts for the Oncology Service Line and for John Theurer Cancer Center (JTCC). The Executive Director will take a leadership role in identifying, qualifying, cultivating and soliciting major and principal gifts from grateful patients, corporations, trustees and friends of JTCC and the network Oncology Service Line. The ED will also work closely with HMH Foundation VPs and EDs to develop and drive strategies to raise funds through annual giving, planned giving, institutional giving and events. The Executive Director will be expected to contribute to the creation of long-term plans, annual budgets, and implementation of short- and long-term fundraising goals for Oncology. The position directly supervises one Director, providing mentorship and guidance to maximize fundraising outcomes and ensure alignment with organization priorities. In this leadership position, the Executive Director will interface with Board members across the Network and will work cooperatively with the Chairman and Executive Director of JTCC to ensure priorities are well-funded. The Executive Director will coordinate network-wide oncology-related fundraising initiatives with colleagues across the network.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of an Executive Director, Development, Oncology at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Develops, executes and monitors a comprehensive development program, and leads all major gift fundraising efforts for JTCC and the network Oncology Service Line.
  • Responsible for setting and achieving goals within budget, leading a team to produce at least $10 million annually in production revenue for JTCC and Oncology across the network.
  • Understands the comprehensive network-wide Oncology Service Line, its mission, culture, programs, and operations; as well as its base of financial support and the funding requirements necessary to accomplish its goals.
  • Establishes strong working relationships with staff within JTCC and the HMHF, and the broad spectrum of services related to a comprehensive cancer center. 
  • Partners with physicians within JTCC and the network Oncology Service Line to engage grateful patients to support the Oncology Service Line philanthropic priorities.
  • Supervises the Director, providing coaching, support, and regular performance evaluations.
  • Possesses a working knowledge of and being an advocate for the programs of the Department of Oncology; ensuring that program and development staff work collaboratively toward the same goal.
  • Develops and implements fundraising programs and strategies to raise significant funds for cancer-related fundraising priorities, including, but not limited to, research, program support, endowment, fellowships, Chairs and Professorships.
  • Encourages and fosters an atmosphere of cooperation, mutual respect and collegiality between the network Oncology Service Line, JTCC and the HMHF. 
  • Identifies, qualifies and cultivates relationships with individuals capable of making contributions to JTCC and the network Oncology Service Line.
  • Plans and implements cultivation and stewardship initiatives for major donors.
  • Leads cultivation events to broaden the base of support through cultivation of new prospects and donors.
  • Solicits, either alone, or with strategic partners, individuals capable of making substantial financial contributions to JTCC and/or the network Oncology Service Line.
  • In partnership with the institutional giving team, cultivates relationships and prepares proposals for private foundations.
  • Identifies gift opportunities and projects within JTCC and the Oncology Service Line that might attract the support of foundations. 
  • Coordinates with HMHF on prospect research efforts for JTCC (individuals, foundations and corporations) through attendance at regular strategy and portfolio management meetings.. 
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned. 
  • Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of experience in all aspects of developing and implementing successful fundraising for individuals, corporations and foundations.
  • A successful track record of personally identifying, qualifying, cultivating and soliciting major individual and institutional donors.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; adept at crafting proposals, donor correspondence and other philanthropic materials.
  • Proven management experience and ability to supervise, mentor and evaluate staff.
  • Ability to work successfully with physicians, Board members and volunteer leadership.
  • Working knowledge of planned giving vehicles.
  • Proven managerial and administrative skills.
  • Working knowledge of budget development and management. 
  • Proficient computer skills that include, but are not limited to, Raiser's Edge NXT and Google Suite platforms.

  • Diplomatic and politically savvy; a skillful negotiator who is able to see all sides of an issue and prioritize and balance competing interests.
  • Experience in health care development, particularly in a cancer center or with an Oncology service line.

Compensation
Starting at $153,732.80 Annually

HMH is committed to pay equity and transparency for our team members. The posted rate of pay in this job posting is a reasonable good faith estimate of the minimum base pay for this role at the time of posting in accordance with the New Jersey Pay Transparency Act and does not reflect the full value of our market-competitive total rewards package.

The starting rate of pay is provided for informational purposes only and is not a guarantee of a specific offer. Posted hourly rates may be stated as an annual salary in the offer and posted annual salaries may be stated as an hourly rate in the offer, depending on the level and nature of the job duties and credentials of the candidate. The base compensation determined at the time of the offer may be different than the posted rate of pay based on a number of non-discriminatory factors, including but not limited to:

  • Experience: Years of relevant work experience.
  • Education and Certifications: Level of education attained, including specialized certifications, credentials, completed apprenticeship programs or advanced training.
  • Skills: Demonstrated proficiency in relevant skills and competencies.
  • Geographic Location: Cost of living and market rates for the specific location.
  • Internal Equity: Compensation is determined in a manner consistent with compensation ranges for similar roles within the organization.
  • Budget and Grant Funding: Departmental budgets and any grant funding associated with the job position may impact the pay that can be offered.

Some jobs may also be eligible for performance-based incentives, bonuses, or commissions not reflected in the starting rate. Certain positions may also be eligible for shift differentials for work performed on evening, night, or weekend shifts.
