The Executive Director, Annual Giving provides strategic oversight and operational leadership for a comprehensive annual giving program designed to acquire, retain, and upgrade donors, with a strong focus on cultivating leadership-level gifts ($1,000–$50,000+). This individual is responsible for driving annual fundraising growth, leading a high-performing team, and integrating digital, direct response, and personal outreach strategies to build a robust donor pipeline that supports major and principal gift development. The Executive Director works closely with senior leadership, foundation colleagues, and HMH partners to ensure annual giving aligns with broader philanthropic goals
Responsibilities
A day in the life of an Executive Director, Annual Giving at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
- Sets vision, goals and strategies for a comprehensive annual giving program that achieves annual fundraising goals, broadens the base of support and strengthens the major gift pipeline.
- Develops and executes a coordinated matrix of annual giving communication and solicitation strategies involving email, direct mail, digital channels, personal visitation, grass roots events and volunteer engagement, all focused on shaping a sustainable tradition of annual support.
- Mentors and supervises the leadership annual giving and annual giving teams.
- Develops and manages specialized annual giving campaigns for board, leadership, physician, employee/staff and other stakeholders, as well as special interests like network-wide or campus-specific initiatives.
- Tracks and analyzes key metrics of annual appeals and other efforts. Ensures targets are met and makes adjustments as necessary to achieve goals.
- Manages a prospect pool with annual goals for personal visits and giving outcomes.
- Works effectively with major gifts and planned giving teams to gain strong participation in annual giving and builds strategies for moving donors to higher giving levels.
- Maintains appropriate donors records and documents, including proposals, reports, agreements and other pertinent documents.
- Collaborates closely with foundation leaders and colleagues to coordinate and optimize efforts, including the donor relations team for donor retention and stewardship efforts and the communications team for schedules, brand and message consistency.
- Contributes to the planning and implementation of capital and other campaigns.
- Participates in Foundation team meetings and strategy sessions.
- Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
- It is understood that the Executive Director, Annual Giving role will evolve or change with the priority needs and direction of HMHF, as determined by the CDO of HMHF.
Qualifications
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Baccalaureate degree from an accredited four-year college or university.
- Minimum of 8–10 years of progressive fundraising experience, including at least 3 years in annual giving leadership with demonstrated success in donor acquisition and leadership giving.
- Proven ability to lead and develop high-performing teams, manage complex workflows, and achieve revenue and participation goals.
- Strong understanding of multi-channel fundraising, including direct mail, digital, phone, peer-to-peer, and personal solicitation.
- Experience with grateful patient fundraising programs in a healthcare setting, including collaboration with clinical staff and patient privacy compliance (HIPAA).
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to craft compelling messages and interact confidently with donors, leadership, and stakeholders.
- Analytical and data-driven mindset, with experience using Raiser’s Edge and reporting tools to guide decision-making.
- Strategic thinker with project management expertise, able to manage competing priorities and deliver results on time and within budget.
- Ability to work collaboratively across departments, with a flexible and adaptive leadership style.
- Ability to interface effectively with a variety of people including leaders, donors, board members, physicians, colleagues, and vendor partners to establish productive, ongoing relationships.
- Highly functional with Blackbaud database or similar, including proficiency in recording actions and associated relevant information in a timely fashion.
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:
- Working knowledge of fundraising principles and practices.
- Highly functional with Google Office.

Compensation
Starting at $180,918.40 Annually
HMH is committed to pay equity and transparency for our team members. The posted rate of pay in this job posting is a reasonable good faith estimate of the minimum base pay for this role at the time of posting in accordance with the New Jersey Pay Transparency Act and does not reflect the full value of our market-competitive total rewards package.

Experience: Years of relevant work experience. Education and Certifications: Level of education attained, including specialized certifications, credentials, completed apprenticeship programs or advanced training. Skills: Demonstrated proficiency in relevant skills and competencies. Geographic Location: Cost of living and market rates for the specific location. Internal Equity: Compensation is determined in a manner consistent with compensation ranges for similar roles within the organization. Budget and Grant Funding: Departmental budgets and any grant funding associated with the job position may impact the pay that can be offered. Some jobs may also be eligible for performance-based incentives, bonuses, or commissions not reflected in the starting rate. Certain positions may also be eligible for shift differentials for work performed on evening, night, or weekend shifts.
In addition to our compensation for full-time and part-time (20+ hours/week) job positions, HMH offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, vision, paid leave, tuition reimbursement, and retirement benefits.
