The Vascular Technician performs assigned duties under the direction of the Registered Professional Nurse. Demonstrates positive behavior and the ability to implement a plan of care. Duties require detailed knowledge of surgical instruments and prescribed procedures to provide Surgeons the appropriate sterile instruments and supplies throughout the course of surgery.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Vascular Technician at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Accurately completes assignments within scheduled time periods: Assignments are accurately completed with appropriate supervisory counseling. Completes patient related activities within scheduled time periods.
  • Communicates pertinent patient information and actual or potential problems: Reports timely and accurate changes in the patient's condition throughout shift, before breaks, during transfer and shift report: Change in vital signs and blood sugars, Turns in assignment sheet for evaluation and change in pain status. 
  • Cooperates with reassignments in the interest of patient care: Adapts work schedule to meet the needs of the unit. Ensures adequate staffing needs are met through willingness to float. Accepts changes in room assignments and/or scrub assignments. 
  • Demonstrates the ability to care for patients by providing safe, direct patient care.: Demonstrates knowledge and competency in completing assigned treatments and procedures according to established standards and policies. Performs patient care duties in a safe and efficient manner. Follows plan of care as directed by the Registered Nurse. Examples may include but are not limited to: Assists with placing patients in prescribed body positions so as to assure access to the operative area and prevent harm to patients during the procedure. Serves as scrub tech during procedures handling sterile instruments and supplies to the surgeon while maintaining aseptic technique. Assists the physician and anticipates his/her needs during the procedure i.e. holds retractors etc. Keeps track of amounts of solutions used to irrigate surgical incision so amounts can be subtracted from total fluid to determine patient blood loss. Helps the RN with preparation for cases, gathering supplies, instruments and equipment. Correctly identifies blood, solutions, drugs, drainage tubes and appliances ordered. Performs other duties which may include room stock, workroom instrument processing, room cleaning etc. Verifies sponge, instrument and needle count with circulating nurses before surgery, before closure and after closure. Transports patients to the recovery room as needed.
  • Exercises calm behavior and utilizes appropriate judgment during emergency situations.: Appropriately participates during crisis situations. Isolates and removes other patients. Assists with and reassures, stays with a patient in need and maintains sterility of field as situation permits.
  • Participates in the improvement processes of quality patient care.: Takes self-directed or self-motivated initiative to do more than is expected or required in the job, acts before being required to, to improve job performance, and/or creates new opportunities. Participates in unit/department PI activities. 
  • Provides for effective and safe patient/customer outcomes through practice, judgment and critical actions.: Clinical practice accurately reflects Code of Ethics, the New Jersey Department of Health regulations and institutional policies and procedures. Adheres to current NJ Department of Health regulations, JCAHO and institutional policies and procedures, and promotes professional ethics/standards. Follows HMH Guidelines of Cooperation and Discipline.
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
  • Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Graduate of an accredited ultrasound program.
  • Experience in arterial duplex, ABI/PVR, carotid, venous, venous insufficiency, abdominal aorta and renal ultrasounds.
  • Ability to perform general sonography.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

  • A minimum of two (2) years of vascular ultrasound experience.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

  • AHA Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification.
  • ARDMS-RVT certification or eligible to obtain.
