Assistant Program Director,

Psychiatry Residency Program & Staff Psychiatrist

Hackensack Meridian Health

Ocean University Medical Center

Brick, New Jersey

Hackensack Meridian Health is looking for a dedicated, academically minded psychiatrist to serve as Staff Psychiatrist and Assistant Program Director for the Psychiatry Residency Program at Ocean University Medical Center (OUMC).

In this role, you'll keep an active clinical practice while helping shape the education of future psychiatrists. Working closely with the Program Director, you'll help build an excellent learning environment, mentor residents in clinical work and scholarship, and support the program's ACGME standards. We're looking for a psychiatrist who enjoys teaching, values collaboration, and is committed to high-quality, patient-centered care.

Position Highlights:

  • Balanced clinical and academic role: The position is 70% clinical, 20% academic, and 10% administrative, so you can practice psychiatry while also taking part in medical education.
  • Educational leadership: Work with the Program Director to shape curriculum, didactics, and resident evaluation in a growing residency program.
  • Teaching and mentorship: Teach and supervise psychiatry residents, fellows, and medical students, and guide residents in research and quality improvement.
  • Collaborative environment: Report to the Chair of Psychiatry at OUMC and the Regional Chair of Psychiatry for the HMH Southern Region, with the support of a large health system.
  • System-wide resources: Work within HMH's continuum of behavioral health services, including the Urgent Care Center with Behavioral Health in Neptune, NJ.

Key Responsibilities:

Staff Psychiatrist

  • Provide full-time clinical psychiatric services (at least 40 hours per week, not counting call and weekend rounds) at OUMC and other assigned locations.
  • Teach and supervise psychiatry residents, fellows, and medical students in the clinical setting.
  • Serve as collaborating physician for Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) as needed.
  • Respond quickly to Emergency Department consultation requests and follow Medical Staff Bylaws on consultations.
  • Take part in quality improvement work, including setting performance measures, reviewing outcomes, and improving care processes.
  • Serve on committees and task forces, and take part in the call schedule, including coverage of the Urgent Care Center with Behavioral Health in Neptune, NJ.

Assistant Program Director (working with the Program Director)

  • Educational environment: Maintain a learning environment that develops residents in all ACGME core competencies, and help schedule didactic and clinical education and keep its quality high.
  • Curriculum and conferences: Help prepare and run a well-organized curriculum. Make sure conferences are scheduled during protected time and that core conference attendance targets are met.
  • Faculty and resident oversight: Help select and evaluate faculty, monitor resident supervision at all sites, and assess each resident's competence.
  • Accreditation and compliance: Help prepare ACGME and HMH GME documents. Make sure the program follows ACGME and Review Committee policies, institutional requirements, and grievance and due process procedures.
  • Resident duty hours and well-being: Put duty-hour and moonlighting policies into practice, and make sure backup support is available when patient care gets unusually demanding.
  • Resident selection and advancement: Follow institutional policies on resident selection, evaluation, promotion, supervision, and disciplinary action.
  • Scholarship: Support resident scholarly work by mentoring them in research and quality improvement.

Qualifications:

  • M.D. or D.O. from an accredited medical school
  • Board certification in Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN)
  • Minimum of 5  years of post-residency clinical experience
  • Experience in, or strong interest in, graduate medical education, such as core faculty, teaching, or resident supervision
  • Familiarity with ACGME requirements preferred
  • Strong passion for teaching, mentorship, and collaborative care
  • Must have, or be eligible for, a New Jersey Medical License, CDS, and DEA
