Overview

Under the direction and supervision of the Attending Physician in the Surgical Department, the Supervisor APP (Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner is responsible to manage a variety of patients in the surgical setting. The Supervisor, APP provides direct and indirect patient care optimizing patient safety to surgical patients. Administratively supervises activity of all of the surgical APNs/PAs. Administrative duties include managing other APNs and PAs in the department including, but not limited to, hiring, orienting, training, scheduling, evaluating performance, providing timely feedback and support, and ensuring appropriate utilization of APN/PA's throughout the hospital. The Supervisor, APP oversees daily departmental operations, works closely with the APNs/PAs in the department and acts as a liaison between the APPs, surgeons and hospital leadership.

Responsibilities

1. Assists in the selection and evaluation of Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants in the Department.

2. Oversees the training of all new Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants on clinical protocols and procedures.

3. Defines job expectations and monitors productivity.

4. Develops and implements competencies for Nurse Practitioners/Physician Assistants with assistance from the Lead APN/PAs where applicable.

5. Responsible for scheduling and assignment of Nurse Practitioners/Physician Assistants to maintain appropriate staffing and coverage.

6. Develops and implements process improvement initiatives and procedures for the Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistants.

7. Organizes and provides in-service education for Nurse Practitioners/Physician Assistants.

8. Develops and implements competencies for Nurse Practitioners/Physician Assistants in accordance with the APN council's competency guidelines as well as Institute specific guidelines.

9. Works in conjunction with physician staff to recommend, evaluate and procure new technology and supplies for the Department. Organizes product evaluation activities of the Nurse Practitioners/Physician Assistants.

10. Assures compliance with practice standards for the safe delivery of care. Monitors and assures effective and safe implementation of clinical protocols.

11. Assures Nurse Practitioners/Physician Assistants are compliant with licensure, certification requirements and supervision agreements. Assures Nurse Practitioners/Physician Assistants are compliant with JCAHO standards, yearly PPDs and mandatory annual education. Ensures compliance with quality monitoring reports as required.

12. Represents the Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant at Department staff meetings. Interacts with external organizations and vendors, etc. representing Nurse Practitioners/Physician Assistants for the Department.

13. Provides liaison functions between Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant, staff physicians, administration, other departments and external groups

14. Clinical supervision and annual review of the clinical skills of the Advanced Practice Nurses and Physician Assistants will be done by the supervising/collaborating physicians. The Supervisor, APP is responsible for the administrative portion of the annual review and participates in disciplinary actions with input from the supervising/collaborating physicians, and Lead APNs/PAs where applicable.

15. Responsible for rounding with all APN/PA teams within the department on a periodic basis.

16. Regularly meets with all teams, as well as the Lead APN/PA where applicable, and the Administrative Director of the Department. 17. Contributes and is held accountable to the budgetary process.

18. Performs administrative duties in all areas of the department when necessary. Clinical Functions:

19. Performs the duties of a clinical Physician Assistant.

20. Works in collaboration with the surgical attending physicians and consulting physicians to deliver proficient care to all surgical patients.

21. Demonstrates competency in performing all core functions and specialty functions as outlined in HUMC`s delineation of clinical privileges for Physician`s Assistants

22. In collaboration with the attending Physician, requests the appropriate consultations.

23. Attends/conducts informational and formal meetings with patients` families; provides emotional support to patients` families.

24. Participates in the staff and patient/family education process. Develops patient/family educational materials promoting current clinical practice guidelines.

25. Demonstrates clinical expertise and utilizes advanced assessment skills in surgical patient management to propose interventions and/or action plans utilizing evidence-based research to achieve positive outcomes for patients and families.

26. Attends meetings such as patient care conferences, team meetings, staff or departmental Grand Rounds, training programs, seminars, mortality and morbidity conferences etc. Incorporates appropriate material into evidence-based clinical practice.

27. Supports and demonstrates regulatory compliance related to quality standards and expectations, policies and procedures.

28. Adheres to all hospital infection control and safety policies and procedures.

29. Identifies opportunities and makes recommendations for process improvements resulting in optimized patient care

30. Works in a professional and collaborative manner with all staff and physicians.

31. Displays a commitment to the value of teamwork by building strong relationships with patients, families, coworkers and the surrounding community. Cooperates and collaborates to perform duties promoting a unified and spirited workplace.

32. Lifts a minimum of 5 lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 10 lbs. and stands a minimum of 6 hours a day.

33. Identifies the needs of the surgical patient population and modifies and delivers care that is specific to those needs (i.e., age, culture, language, hearing and/or visually impaired, etc.). This process includes communicating with the patient, parent, and/or primary caregiver(s) at their level (developmental/age, educational, literacy, etc.).

34. Adheres to the standards identified in the Medical Center's Organizational Competencies.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
1. Successful completion of an approved physician`s assistant program, accredited by the AMA Council on Medical Education.
2. Master`s degree.
3. Completion of Institution required Manager training.
4. Maintains PA delineation of clinical privileges for surgery via annual review.

Licenses and Certifications Required:
1. Advance Practice Nurse License or Physician Assistant License.
2. AHA Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification.
3. Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification.

Compensation
Minimum rate of $148,262.40 Annually

Internal Equity: Compensation is determined in a manner consistent with compensation ranges for similar roles within the organization. Budget and Grant Funding: Departmental budgets and any grant funding associated with the job position may impact the pay that can be offered. Some jobs may also be eligible for performance-based incentives, bonuses, or commissions not reflected in the starting rate. Certain positions may also be eligible for shift differentials for work performed on evening, night, or weekend shifts.
