Overview
The Neonatal Supervisor Nurse Practitioner is responsible to develop and assist administratively and support clinical care on the Clinic and also function as a resource educator to the unit. This includes developing and overseeing clinical care protocols as well as Quality Improvement and Performance Improvement oversight, to ensure continual quality care. This is in addition to delivery of normal daily clinical patient care.
This role is responsible for the comprehensive care of neonates and infants. Care is delivered at Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Special Care Nurseries
Core Clinical Duties & Privileges:
- Attend "high-risk" deliveries at the request of the obstetrician or perinatologist to provide immediate neonatal assessment and resuscitation.
- Perform and manage neonatal consults in the well-baby nursery, pediatric floor, and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).
- Provide clinical management for infants admitted to the NICU and SCN, including writing admission, procedure and transport notes, managing ventilation, and coordinating care with referring and specialty physicians.
- Attend and communicate with the transport team while on neonatal transports.
- Accompany critically ill infants to the operating room at the request of the pediatric surgeon or anesthesiologist.
- Be available for telephone consults with community pediatricians regarding neonatal concerns.
Academic & Teaching Responsibilities:
- Provide daily teaching rounds with pediatric residents, medical students and other advanced practice providers.
- Formally supervise, review, and co-sign the clinical procedures performed by residents or APP trainees
- Provide formal teaching lectures for residents and medical students as part of the academic curriculum.
- Become and maintain status as a Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) instructor, responsible for teaching NRP courses and running mega-codes for residents, nurses, and other physicians.
- Actively participate in scholarly activities (e.g., research, publications) in support of the Division of Neonatology.
- Attends required educational division conferences
Operational & Scheduling Requirements:
- Provide and ensure 24/7 in-house on-call service for all required locations.
- Provide back-up coverage to other on-service providers and, when required, to the NICU at affiliated medical centers (e.g., JSUMC).
- Attend weekly discharge planning meetings to coordinate and expedite patient discharge plans with case management.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Assists in the selection and evaluation of Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants in the Division.
- Oversees the training of all new Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants on clinical protocols and procedures.
- Defines job expectations and monitors productivity, including appropriate billing/ coding.
- Responsible for approving and if necessary, assisting with scheduling and assignment of Nurse Practitioners/Physician Assistants to maintain appropriate staffing and coverage.
- Develops and implements process improvement initiatives and procedures for the Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistants.
Responsibilities
1. Demonstrates clinical expertise and utilizes advanced assessment skills in areas of clinical specialty to propose intervention and/or action plan utilizing evidence-based research to achieve positive outcomes for patients and families. 2. Responsible for developing standards, monitoring compliance with mandatory continuing education, credentialing, performance appraisal, monitoring ensuring competency in performing all clinical procedures for nurses providing care to trauma patients, performs all utilization review and risk management activities. 3. Supervises, develops, and evaluates clinical skills of APPs. 4. Accountable for being a role model, maintaining high standards of care and serving as a clinical educator and resource for nurses/APPs in clinical settings. 5. Prioritizes and evaluates patient/family progress towards health outcome achievement utilizing a multidisciplinary approach. 6. Participate in leadership activities such as committees, professional organizations, publishing, teaching, and research. 7. Works in collaboration with the attending physicians, residents, medical students and consulting physicians to deliver proficient care to the patients. 8. Coordinates the development of evidence-based standards of care including maps, protocols, and clinical tools to enhance the multidisciplinary care coordination process. 9. Demonstrates clinical expertise and utilizes advanced assessment skills in patient management to propose interventions and/or action plan utilizing evidence-based research to achieve positive outcomes for patients and families. 10. As needed, respond to trauma team activations, and assist the trauma attending in the assessment, ordering, and management of the trauma patient in the acute period. 11. Supports IRB approved clinical research/trials including but not limited to obtaining consent, ordering diagnostic tests, recording laboratory and diagnostic results; administering therapeutic interventions, and documenting and reporting patient outcomes. 12. Perform complex diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in the trauma/critical care patient, prescribe necessary treatment and services for quality patient care. 13. Responsible for assisting in the planning and implementation of care services orientation, in-service, and staff development. 14. Maintains a collaborative practice agreement with section physicians. 15. Interviews and recommend Physician Assistant/Advanced Practice Nurse candidates as needed. 16. Identifies educational needs of patients/families and collaborates with other multidisciplinary team members to develop programs and teaching materials. 17. Identifies the needs of the patient population served, modifies, and delivers care that is specific to those needs (i.e., age, culture, language, hearing and/or visually impaired, etc.). This process includes communicating with the patient, parent, and/or primary caregiver(s) at their level (developmental/age, educational, literacy, etc.). 18. Analyzes patterns of variance in practice making recommendations for evidence-based changes to improve patient outcomes utilizing a multidisciplinary approach. 19. Facilitates and coordinates/participates in formal or informal educational programs which include mentoring. 20. Utilizes and disseminates relevant research findings through clinical practice, education, or consultation. 21. Serves as a clinical resource person to nursing staff, patients/families, and other multidisciplinary team members across the continuum to evaluate complex patients and identify appropriate desired outcomes and interventions. 22. Where applicable there may be a separate, department-specific Scope of Practice Addendum which details the specific clinical responsibilities, patient populations, required procedures, operational workflows, and other expectations unique to the department. This addendum is an integral part of this job description and will be reviewed and acknowledged by the team member. 23. Other duties and/or projects as assigned. 24. Qualifications
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: 1. Graduate of an NLN/AACN accredited program in nursing. 2. Master's degree. 3. Maintains clinical competencies through participating in continuing educational programs (contact hours per years), and clinical practice as mandated by Board of Nursing and national certification body. 4. Recent clinical experience in area of specialty. 5. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 6. Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred: 1. Experience in Supervisory role.
Licenses and Certifications Required: 1. NJ State Professional Registered Nurse License. 2. Advance Practice Nurse License. 3. BLS AHA Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification. 4. Maintains National or Board Certification as appropriate in area of specialty. 5. Maintains collaborative agreement with the applicable physician(s). A. Fulfills all terms of collaborative agreement 5. AHA Pediatric Advanced Life Support Certification. 6. AHA Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification. 8. Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification 9. NNP-BC cert.
Required Department-Specific Certifications:
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Instructor certification is required.
- National or Board APP Certification in Neonatology (e.g., NNP-BC) is required.
- Master's degree in Nursing (MSN)
- Extensive experience in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) level 3C or 4
- Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to supervise healthcare providers
- Strong clinical judgment and decision-making skills in managing complex neonatal conditions
Compensation
Minimum rate of $146,057.60 Annually
