Overview

Provide sleep medicine care coordination, which includes managing a variety of services for the Inpatient and Outpatient sleep medicine program. Provide a high-quality care to promote the enhancement of health and prevention of illness. Create strategies to improve or manage a patient's health and introducing habits for health promotion. Diagnose, treat and manage sleep disorders. Assess patient health through interviews, consults and physical examinations. Advise the patient, their families, clinicians and the public on sleep health issues. Engage in continuous education to remain ahead of any technological, methodological, or other developments in the sleep field.

Position will be primarily on site at OUMC but will travel to other hospital locations as needed. This position will be 6 hours a day Mon-Fri.

Responsibilities

1. Evaluates/treats and maintenance of all sleep disorders such as: apnea, narcolepsy/idiopathic hypersomnia/ sleepiness due to sleep deprivation / circadian rhythm disorders / restless legs syndrome / parasomnias / insomnia may be done in person or with the use of telemedicine.

2. Outpatient and inpatient responsibilities include but not limited to: initial patient consult, follow up visits, history and physical documentation, review of inpatient chart, sleep specific documentation, use of sleep specific screener questionnaires, patient observations, pre and post-operative plans as they pertain to sleep disorders, sleep discharge planning, provider referrals, prescriptions for testing and treatment.

3. Prepares, dictates and signs patient care plans and summaries of patient interactions.

4. Order, administer and analyze diagnostic tests results: will learn to read sleep study reports including adult and pediatric in-lab sleep studies (polysomnography, titrations, MSLT, MWT, split, PAP naps), home sleep testing, actigraphy, pulse oximetry, pap compliance reports.

5. Administer and teach CBT-I and Sleep Hygiene.

6. Recommend and or order appropriate therapeutic interventions / treatment, monitors patient status and response to therapeutic intervention /treatment and make needed recommendations or changes.

7. Maintains records according to established standards and guidelines.

8. Monitor and operate medical equipment.

9. Prescribe, recommend and regulate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapies across multiple care settings, including controlled medications that are warranted by patient's diagnosis or changing medical condition.

10. Detect changes in a patient's health and change treatment plans as necessary.

11. Adjusts patient care plan by reviewing and monitoring treatments and therapy plans. Counsels, instructs and educates patients and their families.

12. Provides clinical direction to nursing staff and sleep team members regarding the continued care of patients. Follows through to ensure patient receives recommended care.

13. Interact and consult with healthcare professionals as needed.

14. Other duties and/or projects as assigned.

15. Adheres to HMH's Organizational and Managerial competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

1. Master's degree from an accredited nursing program.

2. Willing to take specified sleep classes and participate in training as required by the HMH sleep medical director.

3. Competent with specific clinical assessment using standardized diagnostic tools (e.g., Epworth Sleepiness Scale, STOP-BANG, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index).

4. Competency with Practice Parameters and Clinical Guidelines for sleep health and disorders.

5. Demonstrate advanced knowledge of the pathophysiology of sleep disorders and associated comorbidities.

6. Demonstrate advanced knowledge of sleep testing, treatment and disease management.

7. Advanced background in nursing; an understanding of anatomy, physiology, histology, and pharmacology.

8. Strong interpersonal and counseling skills.

9. Must be proficient with medical instruments and equipment required by the work.

10. Knowledge of computer-based data management programs and information systems, as well as medical records and point-of-interview technology.

11. Ability to communicate effectively, in verbal and written form, with retail and medical partners at various levels, patients, family members, physicians and representatives of the community.

12. Sound understanding of all federal and state regulations including HIPAA and OSHA.

 

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

1. Minimum of one years as a sleep nurse practitioner.

 

Licenses and Certifications Required:

1. NJ State Professional Registered Nurse License.

2. Board certifications by either ANCC or AANP.

3. Must have NJ prescriptive authorization.

4. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and National Provider Identifier (NPI) numbers. 

Compensation
Starting at $92,445.60 Annually

The posted rate of pay in this job posting is a reasonable good faith estimate of the minimum base pay for this role at the time of posting in accordance with the New Jersey Pay Transparency Act and does not reflect the full value of our market-competitive total rewards package.

  • Internal Equity: Compensation is determined in a manner consistent with compensation ranges for similar roles within the organization.
  • Budget and Grant Funding: Departmental budgets and any grant funding associated with the job position may impact the pay that can be offered.

Some jobs may also be eligible for performance-based incentives, bonuses, or commissions not reflected in the starting rate. Certain positions may also be eligible for shift differentials for work performed on evening, night, or weekend shifts.
