Overview
Hackensack Meridian Health is seeking a Inpatient APP Manager for Neurosrugery and Neuro ICU to provide leadership and managerial oversite to neuroscience APN Staff employees. The Neuro PA /Acute Care APN Manager will perform administrative, managerial, teaching, and service-oriented functions to ensure 24/7 inpatient service coverage of neurosurgical service to assigned hospitals and neurosurgical outpatient clinics. In addition the Neuro PA / Acute Care APN manager will perform a variety of clinical duties and technical procedures to assist in the delivery of healthcare services to patients. The successful candidate will work in collaboration with the Neurosurgical Chair and Administrative neuroscience service line administration to provide patient centered care. The Neuro PA / Acute Care APN manager will report to the Administrative Director of Neurosurgical Services and the Neurosurgical Chair.
Responsibilities
- Coordinates schedules of mid-level providers to ensure adequate 24/7 coverage. Assesses staff supply and demand and ensures appropriate delegation of clinical staff coverage, considering complexity of care and volume. Adheres to budgetary expectations associated with staffing at the direction of Administrative leadership. Ensure updates to hospital on call schedule (Amion Schedule).
- Handles all administrative issues including but not limited to: payroll, moonlighting/Per diem shift payments, staff CME tracking, APN license and DEA renewal, staff medical & payer credentialing, OPPE/FPPE staff compliance, receive and respond to all Care Links received for Neurosurgery, and regular attendance at local, regional, and network meetings pertaining to clinical care and service line operations. Works collaboratively to resolve administrative and operational issues.
- Provides managerial oversite to all APN neuroscience staff including: Staff onboarding and training of core duties, clinical competency assessment and documentation of skills in compliance with medical staff privileging, staff education and guidance for skill development/improvement, conducting disciplinary action and as required by HR policy and create action plans for improvement, conduct 90 day, 6 month, and annual reviews of staff, participate in APN and Physician 360 reviews, and mentor/precept medical students, APN interns, and APN residents.
- Develops clinical protocols and policies to ensure best practice adherence to clinical care and maintains staff training and compliance manual. Ensures EMR documentation and compliance with staff.
- Identifies teaching, research, and administrative opportunities for team members and self to further advance skills and abilities.
- Manages APN staff supplies and resources, ensuring ability for staff to perform required duties.
- Plan, organize, and conduct monthly APN staff meetings.
- Enforces compliance with hospital regulations regarding medication reconciliation, venous thromboembolism prophylaxis, present on admission diagnosis, and any future quality assurance programs, yet to be developed.
- Manages the relationship with, and satisfaction of, voluntary and employed physicians with services provided to assure optimal relationships with admitting physicians. Communicates issues to departmental leadership as needed.
Core Clinical Responsibilities:
- Initiates and completes consultations, as the urgency and complexity of the clinical scenario dictates, and initiates treatment for the neuroscience cases in which a consultation is requested and in cases referred for evaluation and treatment in collaboration with the attending physician.
- Charts via written, dictation, or electronic means: admission notes, history and physical examinations, consultations, daily patient encounter notes, urgent evaluation notes, minor procedure notes, and brief post-operative notes as it pertains to patients in the inpatient or outpatient setting; present this information to the supervising physician.
- Participate in house staff rounds with the supervising physician including, but not limited to recording daily, detailed progress notes, determining and implementing therapeutic plans as discussed with physician in charge.
- Perform clinically appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as delegated by the supervising physician and in accordance with the privileges set forth by the Medical Staff Office. Orders necessary laboratory and diagnostic testing. Orders routine fluids, medications, diets, patient activities and similar patient care orders under the supervision of the attending physician. May perform emergency life-saving care and procedures.
- First assists on posted and emergent operative neurosurgery procedures. Reviews and updates as appropriate peri-operative history and physical exam, laboratory, and radiographic studies, ensuring patient optimization for elective surgical interventions.
- Prescribes medications in accordance with federal and state laws and regulations under supervision of licensed physician if approved by the New Jersey Board of Medical Examiners. Under the guidance and direction of supervising physician and in accordance with the New Jersey Board of Medical Examiners, Prescribe controlled dangerous substances only with curent state CDS license and DEA number.
- Provides a prompt and accurate discharge process. Charts discharge summary via written, dictation, or electronic means. Instructs patients regarding discharge orders including medications, durable medical equipment, wound care, outpatient follow up, physical therapy/occupational therapy, activity level etc.
- Function as a resource to health care personnel and participate in their educational programs.
- Exhibit organizational, communication and leadership skills, initiative, accountability, responsibility, appropriate judgment, and decision making.
- Assist supervising physician with office hours and functions as an advocate for patients by managing prescription prior authorization, serving as a clinical expert to obtain surgical prior authorization requiring validation of medical necessity, and resolve issues associated with patient messages that require clinical support.
- Will be required to perform shift work in the hospital or outpatient setting. Team schedules and shift assignments will be created in 8-week blocks to ensure appropriate coverage of service and clinic support. a. In hospital shifts will include daytime (14 hour) and nighttime (12 hour) shifts. b. Outpatient clinic will be during normal clinic hours of 8am to 5pm. c.OR assist shift will report in advance of first surgery to consent patients for surgery. Day time floor staff will relieve surgical assist by no later than 6pm. d. Will be required to travel to multiple hospitals
- Clinical competency as reviewed by Chief of Department of Neurosurgery and/or Chief of Department of Neurology.
- Displays an understanding and awareness of and performs all duties in accordance with the Hospital's Mission and Vision Statements.
- Adheres to all Hospital infection control and safety policies.
- Attends department meetings and relevant subspecialty conferences: spine conference, cerebrovascular conference, M&M. etc.
- Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
- Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
- Lifts a minimum of 5 lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 5 lbs. and stands a minimum of 1 hour a day.
Qualifications
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Graduate of certified physician assistant program
- OR surgical assist experience
- Inpatient Hospital consultation experience
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:
- Neurosurgery or General Surgery experience of 5-7 years required
- Management/Team Lead Experience of >2 years
Licenses and Certifications Required:
- Physician Assistant License
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification.
- Valid drivers license required
Compensation
Minimum rate of $148,262.40 Annually

Certain positions may also be eligible for shift differentials for work performed on evening, night, or weekend shifts.
