Under the direction of the Director(s) of Student Affairs and Wellbeing, the Transitions Coordinator is responsible for supporting and providing appropriate services to medical students during the various phases of their academic and professional journey. They ensure documentation and compliance with milestones throughout their curriculum as required for graduation. This position communicates regularly with Advising, Registrar and Academic Support within the Office of Student Affairs and Wellbeing.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Transitions Coordinator at Hackensack Meridian Health School of Medicine can be described as follows:

  • Develop, plan, and manage all aspects of student transitions with support from the Associate Dean and Director(s) of Student Affairs and Wellbeing;
  • Collaborate with administration, faculty, and staff to create and lead processes in transition planning, including application for STEP 1, ERAS, scheduling of STEP 2CS, STEP 2CK, and Phase 3 completion milestones;
  • Research and maintain current, relevant knowledge regarding all standards, technology and innovative practices and procedures of student related requirements from the governing bodies of medical education, such as AAMC, LCME, AMA, etc.;
  • Initiate, compile, and maintain all records and data required by the Dean’s Office and other official regulatory agencies as directed by the Director of Student Affairs and Wellbeing;
  • Develop and implement standards, programs, policies and procedures consistent with program requirements and needs;
  • Communicate transitions information to the various offices in the School of Medicine to ensure appropriate student support; 
  • Facilitate the identification and development of transition services’ needs;
  • Serve as a resource and primary liaison for the School of Medicine on issues of student transitions;
  • Submit program reviews and other periodic reports;
  • Demonstrate a commitment to professional development and practice of cultural humility
  • Encourage social justice, equity, and sensitivity in program development and service delivery, and;
  • Perform related duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Social Work, Psychology, Sociology or Public Health is required
  • Master’s degree in Education, Student Counseling, College Student Personnel, Psychology, Social Work, Education, Higher Education Administration, or a related field is preferred
  • Three (3) or more years of experience in administration of a higher education program for students is required
  • An understanding of, ability to demonstrate sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, cultural, ability, military, religious, sexual orientation and gender identity backgrounds of medical students, faculty and staff is required
  • Proficiency in database management and standard Microsoft Office and Google Docs applications is preferred
  • Experience in medical education and/or medical residency education is preferred
  • Two (2) or more years of post-graduate and three (3) or more years full-time work experience in academic or career advising is preferred
