The Risk Management Specialist coordinates and participates in a variety of roles associated with the operation of the Medical Center’s risk management function including the design and maintenance of the Medical Center’s incident management database. This position assists with the professional and general liability coverage and claims process.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Risk Management Specialist at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

 

  • Coordinates on-site assessment of actual and potential risks within the Medical Center, assessing 

liability and probability of legal action, and recommends appropriate actions to minimize institutional risks.

  • Maintains database and risk management information and incident reporting systems in accordance with hospital accreditation requirements, and prepares and presents a variety of statistical reports as required.
  • Manages enrollment for professional and general liability contracts. 
  • Reviews, codes and investigates incident reports and related clinical documentation, and recommends corrective actions as appropriate, along with the Risk Manager.
  • Maintains liaison with Medical Center Performance Improvement and Patient Safety Programs to identify, review and make appropriate recommendations concerning performance improvement and patient safety issues.
  • Meets with Consumer Affairs representative and Claims Assistant and evaluates potential claims for general liability, and recommends follow-up and settlement of claims as appropriate.
  • Assists in the development of preventive risk management programs to minimize potential and actual claims and liabilities.
  • Develops and conducts regular Risk Management training programs stressing good documentation and incident reporting to reduce the Medical Center’s liability exposure
  • Participates in Administrative Walk Rounds as part of the Medical Center’s patient safety program.
  • Prepares reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.
  • Lifts a minimum of 10 lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 20 lbs. and stands a minimum of 2 hours a day.
  • Adheres to the standards identified in the Medical Center's Organizational Competencies.

 

Qualifications

Knowledge, Education and Skills Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree with 5 years healthcare risk management experience.
  • Legal support or insurance/claims investigation and settlement may be accepted with other additional applicable healthcare management experience. 
  • Knowledge of legal and regulatory requirements related to health care risk management.

Required Certification/Licensing:  

  • RN or related clinical experience.
