The Sup, Chief Physician Assistant oversees daily departmental operations as well as the Mid-level providers schedule and performance. The Sup, Chief Physician Assistant assists, monitors and manages the day to day needs of the patients as requested by, in conjunction with, and under the supervision of the Chief Cardiac Surgery.
1. Directs the Clinical Cardiac Surgery team on the daily operations of the Open Heart Surgery service line obtains a detailed and accurate history, and identifies problems and presents information to the supervising physician. 2. Assists a supervising surgeon in the operating room when a qualified assistant physician is not required, and a second assistant is deemed necessary by the supervising surgeon. 3. Assists supervising physician in a procedure room when a qualified physician is present and it is deemed that a qualified assistant physician is not needed. 4. Assists in the education and onboarding of surgical physician assistants. 5. Educates and instructs on the usage on Endovein harvesting systems. 6. Provides clinical oversight on the Operating room surgical physician assistants performance and competencies. 7. Establishes education planning for supporting clinical skill set of surgical cardiac surgery physician assistants. 8. Writes post-operative/post procedure note and orders for supervising physician. 9. Performs line as a Â¿first lineÂ¿ person responsible for all the post procedure management of patients as requested by the primary physician. 10. Starts IVs, inserts Foley catheters and nasogastric tubes, irrigates Foley catheters, orders transfusions of blood and products, venipuncture, and debridement, insertion and removal of chest tubes and arterial and central lines. 11. Collaborates with Clinical Data team in the monthly Mortality and Morbidity meeting presentations. 12. Participates in research trials for Cardiac Surgery program. 13. Orders or prescribes medication subject to the following: no controlled substances; the order or prescription is administered in accordance with protocols or specific MD directions; the prescription states whether it is written in accordance with a protocol or specific MD directions; the physicianÂ¿s assistant signs his/her own name and license number, as well as the supervising physician. 14. Adheres to the standards identified in the Medical Center's Organizational Competencies.
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: 1. Collaborative agreement with physician(s) actively on staff who agree to act as the Collaborating Physician(s) of Record as per the PAAct and Regulations, if appropriate to role. 2. Certification by the National Commission for Certified Physicians Assistants (NCCPA) within one year of initial employment by the Medical Center. 3. Registered and licensed by the New Jersey Board of Medical Examiners. 4. Intra-operative experience as a surgical physician assistant in Cardiac surgery greater than 10 years. 5. Proficient skill set Endo-Vein harvesting. Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred: Licenses and Certifications Required: 1. Physician Assistant License and Physician Assistant Certification and Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification. 2. National or Board Certification as appropriate in area of specialty. Licenses and Certifications Preferred: 1. Controlled Drug Substance and Drug Enforcement Agency Certificate.
