The Payroll Auditor conducts reviews of financial controls of Payroll operation activities and makes recommendations for improvements in internal controls. Will prepare, analyze, and report results of various project expenses and investments, payroll department benchmarks, and time and attendance system data.

This position can be fully remote.  Candidates do not need to reside in NJ or surrounding areas.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of Payroll Auditor at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Perform weekly audits in Time and Attendance system to identify non-compliance of compensation policies.
  • Audit timekeepers for non-compliance of accurate time entries, unapproved timecards sent to payroll, deleted IN/OUT swipes, and any other data integrity issues as they arise.
  • Monitor timecards of terminated employees to ensure all hours worked reconcile to term date and all payroll systems have been updated to reflect terminated status.
  • Verifies conformance with pertinent payroll wage and hour laws.
  • Perform audits to validate payroll processing and data integrity in PeopleSoft per payroll checklist.
  • Performs audit of payroll team member entries of direct deposit data to validate the necessity of entry as all entries should be done by employees via E-PAY.
  • Performs monthly invoice reconciliation to compare payroll processing counts to invoices for accurate payment and to identify incorrect invoice billing.
  • Performs audit of employees not setup with either direct deposit or paycard and partners with employee to facilitate setup of electronic method.
  • Performs audits of physician grants and clinical trials to ensure physicians are mapped with current grants/trials for time study reporting.
  • Audits physician contract data to time study attestations to identify inconsistencies.
  • Audits active physician positions to ensure we have the physician contract in PeopleSoft and partners with the Medical Academic Affairs department to facilitate entry of contract.
  • Reviews the physician contract alert reports and monitors timely action of renewal information in PeopleSoft, particularly those with a restricted covenant.
  • Monitor transactions in PeopleSoft for potential fraudulent activity and inaccurate system data.
  • Develop and run ad-hoc reports for Payroll and Finance as needed, utilizing PeopleSoft query and M/S Excel for overtime reporting, pay comparisons, and employee/department audits.
  • Perform testing for system upgrades and implementations as needed.
  • Investigates inquiries and discrepancies resolving in a timely manner.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all payroll data by locking PC when stepping away from desk, being cognizant of surroundings when discussing confidential data, password protecting all files sent through email, not releasing any confidential data without the employee's written consent, verifying manager access before providing any salary information, and keeping all employee information and files restricted to the Payroll staff and approved leaders.
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or equivalent experience.
  • Three or more years' of experience in auditing payroll transactions.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in MS Excel and working knowledge of MS Access.
  • PeopleSoft Query Reporting tool -- ability to create and run queries based on thorough understanding of PSOFT Payroll table structure.
