The Manager of Prospect Development is responsible for the effective management of fundraiser portfolios, as well as the measurement and analysis of the movement of prospects through the fundraising cycle.  The Manager works closely with a cadre of frontline fundraising staff to provide strategic insights, through research and analysis, that will help fundraisers to build and maintain constituent relationships and secure major and principal gifts for HMH.


A day in the life of a Manager of Prospect Management/Development

  • Manages the portfolios of a cadre of frontline fundraisers.  Works in partnership with fundraisers to help them effectively manage prospect assignments by providing insights through ongoing portfolio analysis and discussions.
  • Maintains ongoing communication and holds regular meetings with assigned fundraisers to: 
    • Review their portfolio, with a focus on the statuses of prospects and proposals,
    • Review, analyze and provide insights on portfolio metrics and fundraising moves,
    • Provide ongoing education and support for tracking metrics and activities in the database,
    • Share new prospect assignments, profiles and other research,
    • Move unqualified prospects out of their portfolio,
    • Highlight prospects requiring attention and making recommendations to proactively help move prospects through the engagement cycle,
    • Provide information and insights that helps fundraisers to prioritize and optimize their portfolios.
  • Builds and maintains a strong working relationship with the Principal Giving department to customize pipeline strategies for principal giving prospects.
  • Proactively identifies names of potential donors/prospects to add into pipelines, typically through routine screening and/or data mining, and assists with prospect assignment. 
  • Provides ongoing training to fundraisers on the moves management system and metrics tracking functions as a subject matter expert. 
  • Collaborates with IS and fundraising leaders on the delivery of reports and analytics to help fundraisers understand their portfolios and opportunities, set priorities and advance their pipelines.
  • Helps track and respond to fundraisers’ research needs and requests, including profiles, snapshots, briefings, screenings and other needs.  Regularly interfaces with internal and outsourced researchers to provide guidance on fundraisers’ needs and deliver the most relevant information.  Ensures all researched information is recorded in the donor database for easy access by current and future fundraisers, and works collaboratively with Foundation information services to maintain the integrity of the database.
  • As needed, conducts research, develops profiles, sets alerts, creates reports and data visualizations.
  • As needed, manages larger projects related to mining the donor database, mining patient data, donor modeling and analysis.
  • Provides high level customer service and maintains a solutions oriented mindset.
  • Remains current on healthcare philanthropy trends while adhering to ethical standards established by the Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement (APRA), the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), and the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy (AHP) best practices.
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
  • Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
  • It is understood that the Manager’s role will evolve or change with the priority needs and direction of HMH Foundation, as determined by the Chief Development Officer.


Knowledge, Education and Skills Required:

  • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited four-year college or university required. 
  • A minimum of 5 years of directly related and relevant experience in research and prospect development services with proven experience in prospect management, preferably in a large healthcare system or higher education environment.  
  • Hands-on knowledge of prospect research tools and databases. 
  • Advanced knowledge and proficiency with a fundraising database, such as Blackbaud CRM/Raiser’s Edge.
  • Ability to communicate, both orally and in writing, complex technical issues and information in a clear, concise manner, to individuals with little or no technical background.
  • Professional enthusiasm; ability to innovate and be resourceful; a strong work ethic; superior oral and written communication skills; and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Collegial team player able to interact effectively with diverse internal and external constituencies.
  • Effective in a fast-paced environment and eager to contribute to the collaborative goals of an organization.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple assignments and deadlines.


Knowledge, Education and Skills Preferred:

  • Working knowledge of fundraising principles and practices.
  • Prior experience in a healthcare system.
  • Experience working within a complex nonprofit organization.
  • Experience using Google Workspace tools (e.g., GMail, Gdrive, Docs, Sheets)
