The Executive Director of Prospect Development & Research reports to the Vice President of Philanthropy Operations, the Executive Director of Prospect Development and Research leads all efforts around prospect identification, portfolio management and prospect research to support the ambitious fundraising goals of Hackensack Meridian Health Foundation.The Executive Director is responsible for building a robust donor pipeline while optimizing portfolio assignments and providing research in order to position fundraisers and the Foundation as a whole for growth and success.

This position would include a combination of working remotely and on-site in Edison, NJ.


A day in the life of an Executive Director of Prospect Development & Research at Hackensack Meridian Health can be described as follows:

  • Sets vision, goals and strategies for a comprehensive prospect management and research program to support the frontline fundraisers in achieving their annual goals for dollars raised and other metrics.
  • Develops and oversees policies, processes and workflows for prospect research and portfolio management. Ensures our use of best practices and quality consistency across the network.
  • Ensures a steady flow of new prospects into fundraisers¿ portfolios while holding portfolio managers accountable for moving all assignments through the donor cycle.
  • Executes ongoing strategies for uncovering new prospects and potential, utilizing the most current technology and tools. This includes but is not limited to managing projects related to mining the donor database, mining patient data, donor modeling and analysis.
  • Oversees the research team in the timely production of detailed and accurate reports for fundraising activities, including research profiles, snapshots, briefings, wealth screenings and other research projects as needed (e.g., trends in philanthropy, healthcare fundraising, statistics).
  • Oversees portfolio management activities, including regular meetings with frontline fundraisers, regular review of prospects and statuses, analysis of portfolio metrics, and educating and assisting fundraisers with regard to moves management, analyzing prospect data, and tracking metrics and activities in the database.
  • Builds and maintains strong working relationships with leaders and fundraising teams across the network. Work in close collaboration with the Principal Giving department to customize pipeline strategies for principal giving prospects.
  • Leads the prospect development and research team, including hiring, training and managing staff.
  • Ensure that information discovered through research is properly maintained and documented in the donor database.
  • Collaborate with IS and fundraising leaders on the delivery of reports and analytics to help fundraisers understand their portfolios and opportunities, set priorities and advance their pipelines.
  • Develops and manages the prospect development and research department budget annually.
  • Manages relationships with external vendors for research and prospect development.
  • Performs other duties and/or projects as assigned.
  • Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.



Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Masters degree or specialized certification.
  • Minimum of ten years of professional prospect research and development experience.
  • Experience managing and coaching a team.
  • Motivated, resourceful professional capable of independent function in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and analytical skills.
  • Effective organizational skills and ability to handle multiple projects with being deadline and detail oriented.
  • Ability to interface effectively with a variety of people including senior leaders, donors, board members, colleagues, and vendor partners to establish productive, ongoing relationships.


Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

  • Prior experience in a healthcare system.
  • Experience working within a complex nonprofit organization.
  • Experience using Google Workspace tools (e.g., GMail, Gdrive, Docs, Sheets)
