The Director of Gift Planning leads and manages a comprehensive planned giving program that reflects industry best practices and maximizes charitable contributions through various planned giving vehicles across the Hackensack Meridian Health system. In addition to serving as the primary liaison and advisor to internal and external constituents for all matters related to planned giving, the Director will personally identify, cultivate, and solicit planned gifts. The Director will work collaboratively with the major gift team to enable them to identify planned gift prospects and discuss bequests and planned gifts during cultivation and solicitation. The Director will work with individual donors and their financial advisors regarding their estate planning needs and respond to specific questions in the areas of philanthropic planning and wealth transfer.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Director of Gift Planning at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Identifies, qualifies, cultivates, solicits and stewards donors, assisting them in building relationships with HMHF and supporting its mission through their gifts, particularly bequests, life income gifts, transfers of real property, securities or non-traditional assets and any other deferred or current giving methods.
  • Takes a donor-centered approach, consider the donors' motivations for contributing, their connections to care providers, their family needs, assets, tax consequences, optimum gift planning vehicles and prudent planning strategies. 
  • Provides prompt responses to gift planning inquiries from donors and/or their advisors, engages in conversations with donors and 
  • Manages a portfolio of major gift, planned giving donors, and prospects with a particular emphasis on consistent annual loyal donors with a strong giving history to HMH hospitals. The Director will develop individual cultivation and solicitation strategies for prospects
  • Furnishes clear and understandable written explanations, gift illustrations and gift agreements as appropriate. 
  • Along with the Vice President of Gift Planning, the Director will collaborate with other members of the Major Gifts Teams to implement strategies and actions to identify, cultivate, solicit, and provide stewardship to planned and blended gift prospects, including preparation and presentation of planned gift illustrations, strategic events and programming with the goal of increasing revenue with deferred gifts and documented bequest intentions.
  • Assists the Vice President of Gift Planning in expanding regional Planned Giving Councils with regional estate planning attorneys, financial/estate planners, etc. and oversee effective meetings regionally with these groups and the appropriate development teams.
  • Assists the Vice President of Gift Planning with marketing plans, programming, and execution adhering to best national practices in the Healthcare industry.
  • Increases HMH’s visibility in the professional advisor community by maintaining and developing relationships with key advisors and consistently developing strategies and programs to engage them and raise awareness about HMH and health care offerings.
  • Assists the Vice President of Gift Planning in managing institutional relationships with HMH's trust and charitable gift annuity administrators, banking relationships and with planned giving software administrator.
  • Demonstrates a strong and up-to-date knowledge of the laws and regulations related to charitable giving and charitable gift planning.
  • Collaborates and provides guidance, technical expertise, coaching and assistance in the gift planning process with various constituencies within the Foundation in order for colleagues to be able to identify planned giving prospects among their donor relationships. 
  • Participates in the ongoing enhancements and expansion of gift planning team's operations through close work and cooperation with Communications, Events, Finance, Stewardship, Data and Analytics and other colleagues.
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
  • Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Education and Skills Required:

  • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited four-year college or university required.
  • 7-10 years of experience in planned giving fundraising in a healthcare organization, Higher Ed, or a large, complex non-profit organization.
  • High level of comfort when dealing with high net worth individuals, and an ability to maintain discretion, and a high level of confidentiality when dealing with benefactors.
  • Demonstrated experience in gift planning and estate administration management is preferred.
  • Prior experience in Raiser’s Edge or a similar CRM database software.
  • Professional enthusiasm; ability to innovate and be resourceful; a strong work ethic; superior oral and written communication skills; and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Collegial team player able to interact effectively with diverse internal and external constituencies.
  • Effective in a fast-paced environment and eager to contribute to the collaborative goals of an organization.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple assignments and deadlines.
  • Highly functional with Google Office.

 

Knowledge, Education and Skills Preferred:

  • Working knowledge of fundraising principles and practices desirable.
  • Planned giving marketing experience preferred.
  • Masters Degree Preferred
