The Transcriptionist interprets and transcribes dictation by physicians and other healthcare professionals regarding patient assessment, workup, therapeutic procedures, clinical course, diagnosis, prognosis, etc., in order to document patient care and facilitate delivery of healthcare services.
Responsibilities
A day in the life of a Transcriptionist at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
- Communicates effectively errors in dictation and makes corrections when notified. Effectively communicates to supervisor the need for clarification of phrases for accurate transcription Communicates to supervisor either verbally or in written communication, need to clarify any phrases that are not understandable within a timely manner.
- Demonstrates an understanding of medicolegal implications and responsibilities related to transcription of patient's records to protect patient and institution: Demonstrates knowledge of medicolegal issues and communicates any unusual events to Transcription Supervisor or designee.
- Maintains required documentation applicable to job functions: Chooses accurate demographic documentation on all transcribed reports. Responsible for verifying accuracy of the dictator in identifying the patient by name, MR#, date of birth.
- Medical Knowledge and Understanding: Demonstrates the ability to interpret, translate and edit medical dictation for content and clarity.
- Quality Assurance: Demonstrates ability to use deductive reasoning to detect medical inconsistencies in dictation. Mastery of English grammar. Excellent typing, spelling, and proofreading skills.
- Transcribes dictated reports accurately: Responsible for accurate transcription of dictated reports Reviews typed reports for accuracy before distribution. Reports meet quality standards.
- Transcribes medical dictation timely to provide a permanent record of patient care. Responsible for timely transcription of reports. Daily quantity meets standards.
- Transcribes Proper Report Format: Uses correct structure and style. Maintains accuracy of demographic information including proper dates, patient identifier, clinical information, etc.
- Adaptability: Makes efficient use of time by completing all work assignments. Consistently responsive to directions, commitments and obligations. Adjusts quickly to assignments. Demonstrates desire to learn.
- Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
- Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
Qualifications
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), and/or GED equivalent programs.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:
- Medical Transcription experience.
- Familiarity with medical terminology.
- Experience working in a medical office/environment.
